OverviewConsultant Ophthalmologist with specialist interest in Medical Retina, fixed term part-time 7.75 PA contract, based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham with cross-site working as required (Solihull, Heartlands, Good Hope Hospital). The post is to cover a period of maternity leave within UHB Ophthalmology services in Medical Retina. The successful applicant will maintain a service to meet regional clinical workload and is expected to have post-CCT subspecialty training in medical retina. UHB encompasses 4 hospital sites with >30 consultant ophthalmologists. Eye service is supported by ophthalmic trainees, trust grades, fellows, orthoptists, optometrists, ophthalmic nurses and ophthalmic technicians. Imaging facilities across sites include OCT, OCTA, Bluepeak AF, Multicolour, HRA-OCT for FFA/ICG, California UWF Optos, Ultrasound, UBM, AS-OCT, Corneal topography and research access to FLEX mobile Spectralis and Anterion SS AS-OCT. Main dutiesThis fixed-term post covers maternity leave. The successful applicant will help meet the clinical workload from across the region and is expected to have post-CCT subspecialty training in medical retina. Responsibilities include the management of both acute and chronic general medical retina conditions. The timetable will also include cataract theatre and cataract clinic duties and the post holder will be expected to cover acute general ophthalmology patients on a prospective daytime-only rota. The final timetable will be discussed on appointment. Flexibility with fixed-session timetabling is expected; the department is moving towards a three-session day, with some sessions potentially in the evening and/or weekends. There is an increasing provision of community ophthalmology, including clinics that may involve review of remotely acquired investigations or work at community sites. Flexible/annualised sessions may be included to maximise clinic and theatre capacity for patients. On-CallAt present there are no regular out-of-hours duties. The post includes cover of general ophthalmology ward and urgent patients on a daytime rota. The Trust is a Stage One Trauma Centre, and out-of-hours provision at UHB may be necessary in the future.
