Company : NHS

Location : Basildon, England

Created : 2025-10-09

Job Type : Full Time

Job Description

OverviewOur Acute Critical Care service at Basildon has a wonderful opportunity to join its vibrant community of 5 units on three geographical sites of MSE, each with a distinct profile but a shared culture, managed as an autonomous directorate with approximately 46 level 3 beds (flexible mix of level 3 and level 2) across the group and over 2500 admissions a year. Our Division benefits from excellent executive and operational support with a commitment to meet GPICS standards in full, with an agreed future strategy to continue to expand. This post is a Locum role and will support CESR progression; the post will be converted to substantive once the applicant is on the specialist register.Main duties of the roleYour role will ensure that the decision to admit a patient to Critical Care is made only after discussion with a Critical Care Consultant, that all unplanned admissions occur within 4 hours of decision to admit, and that all patients admitted to Critical Care have a Consultant-directed care plan on admission. All patients admitted are reviewed in person by a Consultant as urgently as the situation dictates and always within 12 hours of admission. Our MSE Critical Care units operate on the "closed unit" model; our Critical Care Consultants are expected to work collaboratively with specialty teams, but the final decisions on admission, discharge and immediate day-to-day management are the responsibility of the attending Critical Care Consultant. You will be expected to participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, provide expert opinion to specialty colleagues when requested (including support for discussions and decisions on treatment escalation planning), communicate effectively with patients and relatives, and manage discussions regarding treatment escalation planning, resuscitation and end-of-life planning with sensitivity. You will, in conjunction with other Critical Care consultants, be directly responsible for the supervision and training of junior doctors working within Critical Care, with a high level of Consultant oversight expected.About usOur ambition is to deliver excellent local and specialist services, to improve the health and well-being of our patients, and provide a vibrant place for staff to develop, innovate and build careers. We aim to maximise our skills and experiences so we can become the best we can be. As one organisation we will recruit the finest and retain more specialist staff due to broader employment opportunities across our Trust.DetailsDate posted: 09 September 2025Pay scheme: Hospital medical and dental staffGrade: ConsultantSalary: 109,725 to 145,478 a year (Pro Rata for Part Time)Contract: Fixed termDuration: 12 monthsWorking pattern: Full-timeReference number: 390-MR-TAC-BA-6164Job locations: Basildon, Nethermayne, Basildon SS16 5NLJob responsibilitiesAre you looking for a challenging Consultant role where you can make a difference every day?
