Job Description

TitleManufacturing and Materials EngineerTitle: Manufacturing and Materials EngineerSalary range: £45,000 to £60,000 per annum depending on experienceLocation: All UK OfficesWorking Pattern: We operate a flexible hybrid working pattern at Frazer-Nash, with time split between the office and working from home.Closing date for this role is 17th January but we may close the vacancy if we receive sufficient applicationsWe’re growing a manufacturing capability to tackle some of the toughest delivery challenges in next-generation nuclear (and adjacent high-integrity sectors). This is a role for someone early in their career who’s hungry to learn fast, solve real problems, and help move the industry forward—proper engineering, properly evidenced, in a highly regulated environment. Why this role is differentYou won’t be parked on small tasks for years. You’ll be on a defined development pathway designed to take junior mechanical/materials engineers and upskill them—through on-the-job learning, mentoring, and formal qualifications—into manufacturing specialists who can make a real impact. If you like the idea of disrupting “how it’s always been done” (with better data, better metallurgy, better specifications, better testing, better substantiation), you’ll fit right in.What You’ll Work OnYou’ll support senior engineers across a mix of manufacturing challenges, for example:Welding & weld integrity (steels, Ni-based alloys): weldability, HAZ behaviour, defect mechanisms, and how we demonstrate integrity.Primary metal processes (castings and/or forgings for heavy plant): how process route and heat treatment drive microstructure and end properties.Materials evidence & testing: tensile, impact, toughness (and exposure to NDT/inspection approaches).Codes, standards & compliance: learning how frameworks like RCC-M and ASME/ASTM influence specifications, qualification evidence, and technical decisions.Engineering documentation: producing clear, auditable technical content—specs, test plans, technical notes, and compliance support. What You’ll Be Doing Day-to-daySupport technical investigations into manufacturing and material performance issues (root cause thinking, evidence-led).Help define and review manufacturing specifications and supplier requirements (with guidance from senior engineers).Assist with test programme planning and interpretation of results (what it means, what it doesn’t, what to do next).Contribute to technical reporting that stands up to scrutiny in regulated industries.Work with mentors to build capability in metallurgy, manufacturing processes, and integrity demonstration. What We’re Looking ForWe care more about your trajectory than a perfect CV. You should have:A degree, apprenticeship, or equivalent in materials, metallurgy, mechanical, manufacturing, welding engineering (or similar).A foundation (academic or early industrial) in some of the following:Welding of steels and/or nickel alloys and/or casting/forging processesMetallurgy and microstructures (what they are, why they matter)Mechanical properties and testing (tensile/impact/toughness basics)Awareness of codes/standards (RCC-M, ASME, ASTM—interest is enough at this stage)Strong communication: able to explain your reasoning and write clearly.A mindset for regulated engineering: careful, evidence-based, and willing to ask good questions.Desirable RequirementsAny exposure to nuclear, defence, pressure systems, or other high-integrity manufacturing.Time spent in a workshop, foundry/forge environment, fabrication/NDT, test lab, or supplier quality.Consultancy or client-facing experience (placement/internship counts).Your development pathway (the point of the role)You’ll be supported by senior engineers through a structured pathway that may include:On-the-job coaching + planned stretch assignmentsFormal training (manufacturing, metallurgy, integrity, codes/standards)Support toward professional registration and role-relevant qualifications (where appropriate)A clear progression route as your capability and ownership growsWe believe in a Two-way learning culture; You’ll help keep us sharp by bringing modern tools and new ways of working—AI-assisted analysis, numerical modelling, and strong software/data skills—while senior engineers provide deep domain experience, practical judgement, and access to a large repository of manufacturing and materials know-how.Due to the nature of the work that Frazer-Nash Consultancy undertake, candidates will be required to undergo pre-employment screening and must be able to satisfy clearance criteria for UK National Security Vetting.BenefitsWe provide our people with an excellent benefit and offering package that comprises:Competitive salary with yearly reviews25 days holiday + the opportunity to buy 5 days.
