About The RoleThe Appointed Person for Lifting Operations is responsible for ensuring that all lifting operations on the Balfour Beatty project are properly coordinated and planned.Lift Plans will be developed for all lifting operations on the project (e.g. static and mobile cranes, telehandlers, excavators and winches) both on surface and underground by the Package Managers of each work area. Each plan must be reviewed and approved by the Appointed Person for Lifting.The Appointed Person is to liaise with respective construction and engineering personnel on the project.What you'll be doing To take overall responsibility and ownership for coordinating all lifting operations and ensuring that lift plans are developed, approved and implemented on site. Assess the lifting operations and establish a safe system of work by writing and briefing Lifting Plans, Method Statements, Risk Assessments, using drawings and information provided by others. Identify different types of cranes including Tower Cranes, explain their capabilities and limitations for given lifting operations from manufacturers specification manuals. Provide planning and select the adequate lifting accessories and equipment, instruction and supervision for the task to be undertaken safely. Establish an effective procedure for reporting defects and incidents and taking necessary corrective action. Be familiar with the relevant parts of the Health and Safety plan where the lifting operation is being carried out and CDM regulations apply. Produce sketches and drawings of lifting configurations using manual or AutoCAD techniques. Arrange for the calculation of weights and centres of gravity for different types of loads, sling sizes and angles. Reviewing Subcontractors Lift plan for approval Arrange for the calculation of lifting equipment point loadings and spreader beam or mat types and sizes. Identify potential proximity hazards, by observation and from information provided, Identify and plan areas, with exclusion zones, for different lifting operations incorporating safe access and egress routes for before, during and after the lifts. Evaluate and explain how environmental factors and the area surrounding the lift zone may affect the planned lifting operation. Implement appropriate communication methods for lifting purposes.Who we're looking for Undertake Project/Contract specific induction provided by the Principal Contractor. CPCS (Red or Blue) Certified Crane Appointed Person – Lifting OperationsCPCS Technical Test A61 – Practical & Theory (mapped to the learning outcomes,achievement of a Red CPCS card follows the successful completion of the fullTechnical Test), or Level 5 NVQ Diploma in Controlling Lifting Operations – Planning Lifts (achievement of a Blue CPCS card follows achievement of NVQ).Please note: CPCS Red card Trained Operator card holders must register for the relevant Level 2 Plant Operations NVQ prior to the expiry of the card to upgrade to a Blue card. Red Trained Operator cards are valid for two years. A CPCS Blue card via NVQ should infer a reasonable level of experience and that competence has been assessed. The role will require the post holder to have a good working communication skill in English, both written and verbal and to be able to report at management level.
