Senior Quantity Surveyor£400–£500 per day | NottinghamThis is a senior-level opportunity for a commercially astute Quantity Surveyor to take ownership of high-value capital and maintenance programmes within a local authority environment. You’ll sit at the heart of delivery—controlling cost, managing risk, and ensuring public money is spent properly, transparently, and to best value.You’ll be trusted to lead, advise, and challenge—bringing structure, discipline, and calm commercial judgement to complex projects.The RoleYou’ll take responsibility for the full commercial lifecycle across a varied portfolio of construction, infrastructure, and maintenance schemes, acting as the go-to commercial lead for project teams and senior stakeholders.Key duties include:Leading cost management from inception through to final accountPreparing and managing budgets, cost plans, cash flow forecasts, and financial reportingRunning procurement exercises, including tender documentation, evaluation, and contract awardProviding clear commercial advice to project managers, engineers, and senior stakeholdersAdministering contracts (JCT and/or NEC) in line with public sector regulationsValuing works, certifying payments, and managing final accountsManaging variations, change control, and commercial riskProducing concise reports for senior management and elected membersSupporting and mentoring junior surveyorsChampioning value for money and best practice throughoutWhat We’re Looking ForDegree-qualified in Quantity Surveying or a related disciplineMRICS (or equivalent), or actively working towards chartershipSolid experience in quantity surveying, cost consultancy, or commercial managementStrong working knowledge of JCT and/or NEC contractsExperience within the public sector, or a clear understanding of UK public procurement regulationsConfident with financial reporting, cost analysis, and commercial decision-makingStrong communicator—able to influence, negotiate, and build trust at all levelsComfortable using Excel and cost management systemsDesirable ExperiencePrevious local authority or wider public sector experienceExposure to sustainability, whole-life costing, or asset managementUnderstanding of lifecycle planning and long-term value creationPersonal QualitiesCommercially sharp, with a firm grip on value for moneyCalm, organised, and detail-drivenCollaborative by nature, but confident enough to challenge when neededResilient and dependable under pressureProfessionally minded, with a commitment to continuous improvementIn short: this is a role for a seasoned QS who understands governance, respects public money, and takes pride in delivering projects the right way.
