Job Description

The Consultant Psychiatrist will provide senior psychiatric leadership within COAST and across the wider CAMHS system.ResponsibilitiesLeading psychiatric assessment and management of complex clinical presentations, including medication managementProviding specialist psychiatric input to young people receiving intensive home treatmentSupporting access and gatekeeping assessments, advising and reviewing cases as requiredActing as Responsible Clinician for young people detained under the Mental Health Act where applicableEnsuring high standards of clinical governance and statutory complianceProviding clinical supervision and support to non‑consultant medical staffParticipating in the CAMHS Consultant on‑call rota (currently 1:9 with compensatory rest)Contributing to service development, redesign and quality improvement workOffering visible clinical leadership across daily handovers, safety huddles, ward rounds and system escalation discussions, supporting coordinated decision‑making across servicesDelivering specialist psychiatric assessment, formulation and treatment planning for young people presenting in mental health crisisSupporting safe and effective intensive home treatment aimed at preventing unnecessary inpatient admissionWorking collaboratively with inpatient services, community CAMHS teams, primary care and provider collaboratives to maintain clear and consistent care pathwaysActing as Responsible Clinician under the Mental Health Act where required, ensuring compliance with statutory and governance frameworksProviding consultation and expert advice to multidisciplinary colleagues and partner agenciesSupervising junior medical staff and contributing to workforce developmentParticipating in leadership forums, contract meetings and strategic discussions relating to CAMHS deliveryContributing to audit, quality improvement and research activity where appropriateBenefitsFlexible job planning and opportunities for hybrid working30 days’ study leave over three years with associated fundingWellbeing initiatives, occupational health services and staff networksOpportunities for teaching, research and service innovationSupportive medical leadership and peer supervision structuresDedicated SPA time with opportunities for teaching, audit and CPD, including access to local psychiatry group meetingsRecruitment & Retention Package (up to £45,000 over three years – pro‑rata for part‑time)£15,000 on appointment£10,000 after 12 months£10,000 after 24 months£10,000 after 36 monthsSPFT is committed to building a workforce that reflects the communities we serve.
