High Voltage Battery Engineer – EV & BESS Systems - Manchester - £55k + OTRole: HV Battery EngineerLocation: ManchesterSalary: £50,000–£55,000 + overtimeJob Type: Full-time, PermanentOverviewAn established specialist within the lithium-ion battery and energy storage sector is seeking an experienced High Voltage Battery Engineer to join its growing Manchester-based team.The business operates within the circular economy, focusing on the safe handling, diagnosis, repair, remediation, and end-of-life processing of high-voltage battery systems from Electric Vehicles (EV) and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).This is a hands-on, site-based engineering role working with high-energy HV systems (400V–1000V+ DC) in operational environments. The position requires strong technical capability, formal HV safety awareness, and the ability to act as the technical authority on site.The RoleYou will take responsibility for the safe diagnosis, repair, dismantling and assessment of lithium-ion battery packs across EV and BESS applications, both at workshop and customer sites.This is not a design role — it is practical, field-focused and safety-critical.Key ResponsibilitiesHigh Voltage EV & BESS SystemsDiagnose and repair lithium-ion battery packs (cell, module, pack and BMS level)Carry out safe isolation and controlled discharge of HV systems (400V–1000V+ DC)Support dismantling and rework of EV and containerised BESS systemsIdentify faults within Battery Management Systems (BMS)Site & Field EngineeringAttend customer and operational sites for assessment, remediation and decommissioning workAct as HV technical lead on siteEnsure correct procedures, permits and RAMS are followedSupport controlled shutdown and safe dismantling of modular/containerised systemsRAMS & Safety ComplianceWrite, review and implement RAMS for HV operationsEnsure compliance with HV legislation, IEC / BS EN standards and ISO 45001Lead toolbox talks and enforce safe systems of workOperate within formal HV permit-to-work systemsTechnical DocumentationProduce detailed technical reports and condition assessmentsMaintain accurate records of HV battery assets and interventionsContinuous ImprovementContribute to improvements in tooling, processes and safety proceduresSupport development of training and best practice around HV battery handlingEssential RequirementsHigh Voltage Battery ExperienceMinimum 3 years' hands-on experience with high-voltage lithium-ion battery systemsDirect experience with EV battery packs and/or BESS systemsProven experience diagnosing, repairing or dismantling HV battery systemsExperience working under formal HV safety rulesTechnical KnowledgeStrong understanding of:Lithium-ion battery architecture (cell / module / pack)Battery Management Systems (BMS)HV isolation, testing and fault-findingContainerised or cabinet-based BESS systemsSafety & ComplianceExperience writing and implementing RAMSStrong risk awareness around high-energy DC systemsComfortable working in operational, safety-critical environmentsDesirable ExperienceHV Authorised Person (AP) status or equivalentExperience within BESS environmentsExperience in battery recycling or end-of-life processingExperience in live site environmentsBenefitsPension scheme20 days annual leave + bank holidaysOvertime availableProfessional development & HV trainingAccess to company vehicle (role dependent)If this is of interest please apply on LinkedIn or email
