Job Description

We are excited to offer the opportunity to join the Heart Team at the Yorkshire Heart Centre, Leeds General Infirmary, as a Junior Clinical Fellow (ST1-2) in Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery. This is a fixed term contract is a fantastic opportunity for those seeking experience of cardiology and cardiac surgery care at a large tertiary cardiac centre. Please note, that we currently have vacancies available to start immediately, if appointed. The contract would run until August 2026. These posts will be tailored to meet training needs, including opportunities for trainees to become involved in research and procedural skills. The posts would be suitable for individuals who have completed foundation posts, or those who wish to evolve their experience in order to prepare for higher specialty training programmes. The successful applicant would be involved in audit and quality improvement projects, including the chance to collaborate with our research teams. Main duties of the job The post holder will undertake ward duties (both Cardiac Surgery and Cardiology), supporting inpatient care on the cardiology admissions unit and the inpatient bed base. There will be opportunities to expand training in cardiology and cardiac surgery specific skills (e.g. cardioversion, central venous access, temporary pacing, CCU care, cardiac catheter lab work, cardiac theatres and imaging including echocardiography) as well as outpatient clinics. It is intended that the duties of the posts will be tailored to the individuals needs, taking into consideration the post holders prior experience, around the service elements of the role. There will be a commitment to 1:11 full shift LST cardiology/surgery on call rota, including long days, nights and twilights. This is fully supported by a resident full shift HST Cardiology rota and twice daily consultant ward rounds. The service is supported by a number of foundation year doctors and IMT 1-2 doctors as well as Advanced Care Practitioners. About us This appointment will be based at the LGI, one of the largest and most modern tertiary cardiac centres in the UK, serving a population of over 3 million. There are 6 state of the art Cardiac Catheter laboratories, with over 2000 PCI procedures, including 24/7 primary PCI, over 900 invasive electrophysiology/cardiac ablation procedures and in excess of 700 implantable device procedures per annum, making the Yorkshire Heart Centre one of the highest volume units in the UK. The TAVI service is one of the largest in the UK. The cardiac MRI service, adult congenital cardiology service, paediatric cardiology and interventional paediatric cardiology as well as adult and paediatric surgical services all complement each other across the same single site. This is a fantastic opportunity for those desiring a sustained experience in cardiology and / or cardiac surgery at a large modern tertiary cardiac centre. It is intended that these posts can be tailored to meet training needs, including opportunities for trainees to become involved in research, quality improvement and procedural skills. The posts would be suitable for individuals who have completed foundation posts or equivalent or wish to evolve their experience (e.g. following core medical training) in order to prepare for higher speciality training programmes. The service is supported by a number of foundation doctors, internal medical and GP trainees as well as Advanced Care Practitioners. As well as time on the wards and on an on-call rota, this allows flexibility to tailor training, including experience in outpatient clinics, catheter lab time, operating theatre observation and cardiac imaging. It is intended that the successful applicant would be involved in audit and quality improvement projects, including the chance to collaborate with researchers to present and publish work. We will ensure that these posts receive dedicated clinical supervision with an experienced named supervisor, portfolio review, study leave and teaching programmes with evidence to count towards future training. This appointment will be based at the Yorkshire Heart Centre, Leeds General Infirmary, one of the largest and most modern tertiary cardiac centres in the UK, serving a population of over 3 million. There are 6 state of the art Cardiac Catheter laboratories, with over 2000 PCI procedures, including 24/7 primary PCI, over 900 invasive electrophysiology/cardiac ablation procedures and in excess of 700 implantable device procedures per annum, making the Yorkshire Heart Centre one of the highest volume units in the UK. The TAVI service is one of the largest in the UK. There are multiple tertiary services including inherited cardiac conditions, valves, heart muscle and adult congenital cardiology. The cardiac MRI service, adult congenital cardiology service, paediatric cardiology and interventional paediatric cardiology as well as adult and paediatric surgical services all complement each other within the same site. The inpatient department consists of three inpatient wards (including acute cardiology admissions and cardiac surgery), a day case interventional ward, a catheter laboratory suite and a 10 bed CCU. The adult Cardiac Surgery unit has the capacity to perform approximately 1000 open heart operations per year. It has two theatres, 12 ITU beds and one dedicated cardiac surgical ward.
