Job Description

Do you want to work with the 15th fastest-growing startup in Europe? If so, you're in the right place.AssetCool is one of Europe's fastest-growing startups, building the fastest path to more power on the grid. We're tackling one of the most urgent challenges in the global energy transition: grid congestion. Electricity demand is rising fast; driven by electrification, AI and data centres. While traditional grid upgrades take years, demand exists today. The grid isn't ready.AssetCool delivers robotic grid upgrades that physically increase the capacity of existing transmission lines by up to 30%, without rebuilding infrastructure. Using advanced robotics and proprietary photonic coatings, we unlock data-centre-scale capacity in weeks to months, not years and at a fraction of the cost and disruption of conventional approaches. Our technology goes beyond capacity. We reduce losses, prevent corrosion, cut corona noise and generate high-value operational data that supports smarter grid operation and maintenance. Our systems are already deployed globally, and we just raised a big funding round from leading energy and climate investors.AssetCool is one of the most innovation-driven companies in the UK energy sector and we're scaling fast! If you're ambitious, mission-driven and excited to work on real deployments that strengthen the industry that really matters, AssetCool is where you can make it happen.Role OverviewThis is a senior technical role within AssetCool's robotics engineering team, leading the mechanical design of systems that operate directly on live high-voltage transmission lines. You will take ownership of mechanical architecture from concept through to field deployment and production, working closely with electronics, embedded software, materials and high-voltage engineering teams. This is a hands-on role suited to an engineer who enjoys solving real-world mechanical challenges in complex outdoor environments.Key ResponsibilitiesMechanical architecture & system designLead the design of conductor-traversing robots and drone-deployed payloadsDevelop mechanisms capable of navigating transmission line hardware and harsh outdoor environmentsDrive system design from concept through prototype, field testing and productionDesign for high-voltage environmentsEnsure mechanically robust designs suitable for operation in high electric-field environmentsSupport safe integration of mechanical, electrical and low-voltage subsystemsMaterials, structures & validationLead materials selection and structural design for durability, environmental exposure and fatiguePerform FEA, tolerance analysis and define validation strategiesAnalyse field feedback and drive design improvementsManufacturing & scalingApply DFM/DFA principles and support transition from prototype to productionWork with suppliers and manufacturing partners to optimise fabrication and assemblyCross-functional collaborationWork closely with electronics, embedded, coatings and field teamsContribute to system design reviews, risk assessments and mentoring of junior engineersRequired Skills & ExperienceBEng / MEng in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.7+ years professional experience in mechanical design of complex systems.Ownership of products deployed in harsh or outdoor environments.Strong CAD proficiency (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or equivalent).Experience with:Precision mechanismsGear systems and motor integrationStructural analysis (FEA)Composite material designStrong understanding of:Tolerance stack-upFatigue and durabilityEnvironmental sealingExperience designing for vibration and shock.Hands-on prototype development and debugging experience.Ability to make pragmatic engineering trade-offs in fast-moving environments.Preferred Skills & ExperienceExperience in robotics, aerospace, automotive or industrial systemsExperience designing for high-voltage or electrically sensitive environmentsKnowledge of composite materials and galvanic isolationExperience with IP-rated enclosure designExperience working with overseas manufacturing partnersExperience integrating payloads with dronesWhy Join AssetCool?Work on groundbreaking technology revolutionizing the power grid.Fast-growing startup with significant industry traction and large-scale projects.Collaborative, innovation-driven team with exciting career growth opportunities.Competitive salary, and flexible work optionsResearch shows that some candidates may hesitate to apply unless they meet every listed requirement.
