Principal & Senior Mechanical Engineers – Rolling StockDerby, UK, HybridWe're supporting a well-established rail engineering consultancy to appoint an experienced Principal & Senior Mechanical Engineer to work across a diverse portfolio of passenger, freight, metro, and light rail rolling stock projects.This is a technically senior role offering real ownership across the full project lifecycle — from feasibility and design through to integration, assurance, testing, and entry into service — with exposure to major operators, ROSCOs, OEMs, and public bodies.The roleYou'll lead the delivery of mechanical engineering solutions, providing high-quality consultancy while ensuring compliance with UK and EU railway standards.Key elements include:Mechanical systems integration and vehicle modification projectsTrain control and protection systems upgradesProduction and approval of design packs, schematics, calculations, and test documentationAssurance against standards such as TSIs / NTSNs and EN 50126 (Functional Safety)Mentoring engineers and leading technical work packagesSupporting bids, estimating, and customer engagementWhat we're looking forStrong Mechanical engineering background with rolling stock experienceProven delivery of Mechanical systems integration and vehicle modificationsSolid understanding of railway standards, approvals, and assurance processesExperience working across multi-disciplinary engineering projectsConfident communicator with the ability to engage customers and stakeholdersDesirable:Chartered Engineer (or working towards)Experience in delivering modifications and upgrades on UK fleets; integration with systems (HVAC, doors, braking, interiors).Exposure to bidding, estimating, or early-stage project workWhy consider this opportunity?High-impact technical role within a respected rail engineering businessExposure to varied rolling stock platforms and complex engineering challengesStrong collaborative culture with opportunities for progressionFlexible / hybrid working arrangementsInterested in a discreet conversation about this opportunity?Please click APPLY and we'll be in touch with more details.
