Consultant Psychiatrist – Austen Ward (Hollins Park Hospital, Warrington) Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dedicated and experienced Consultant Psychiatrist to join our inpatient team on Austen Ward, located at Hollins Park Hospital in Warrington. Austen Ward is a 17‑bed, all‑male general adult inpatient unit, supported by a team of up to three junior doctors, depending on training rotations. The post holder will take on clinical supervision responsibilities for these trainees, contributing to their development and the delivery of high‑quality care. This post has become available following the retirement of the previous Consultant, who served the Trust with distinction for over 20 years. Key ResponsibilitiesConsultant psychiatrist responsible for all patients on Austen ward. Carry out comprehensive psychiatric assessments and provide treatment for inpatients. Support staff to manage psychiatric emergencies. Conduct patient reviews and lead multidisciplinary ward reviews, CPA reviews and multi‑professional meetings. Serve as Responsible Clinician (RC) for the Mental Health Act 1983 (amended 2007) and carry out duties in accordance with the code of practice. Provide verbal evidence to Mental Health Review Tribunals and the Hospital Manager’s hearings. Carry out comprehensive risk assessments and participate in Trust’s risk management processes such as Health Risk Assessment and Management and Multi‑Agency Public Protection Arrangement meetings. Provide medical leadership to the team. Liaise with carers and maintain effective communication with other services. Supervise up to three junior doctors and provide educational supervision.On‑Call and Cover ArrangementsIncluded in the daily consultant on‑call rota for Mid Mersey. Higher trajectory trainee ST4‑6 serves as second on call; CT first on call during weekday evenings, nights and all‑day weekends. On‑call availability supplement is 1% – Band B low frequency, low intensity. Rota currently shared with approximately 20 FTE colleagues. When on‑call, expected to cancel routine work during normal working hours to prioritise unpredictable/emergency calls.Teaching and TrainingSupporting and supervising up to three junior doctors in the team. Teaching commitments for the post are supported by the Trust. Trust‑wide teaching arrangements in locality/team. Participation in undergraduate and postgraduate clinical training. Provide educational supervision to trainees. Participation in continuing medical education within statutory limits.Clinical GovernanceExpected contribution to clinical governance and responsibility for setting and monitoring standards. Participation in clinical audit and other local assurance activities. Participation in service/team evaluation and planning of future service developments.QualificationsMB BS or equivalent medical qualification. Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research, or management. MRCPsych. Additional clinical qualifications. Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practice at the time of appointment. Included on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months. Approved clinician status or able to achieve within three months of appointment. Approved under S12 or able to achieve within three months of appointment. Valid UK driving licence or evidence of a suitable alternative. Excellent knowledge in specialty. Excellent clinical skills using a bio‑psycho‑social perspective and broad medical knowledge. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty. Make decisions based on evidence and experience, including the contribution of others. Meet duties under MHA and MCA AAC. Wide range of specialist and sub‑specialist experience relevant to the post within NHS or comparable service. Academic skills & lifelong learning – able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training. Participated in continuous professional development, research, or service evaluation. Use and appraise clinical evidence and actively participate in clinical audit. Plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training relevant to this post. Reflect on the purpose of CPD undertaken. Experienced in clinical research and/or service evaluation. Evidence of achievement in education, research, audit, and service improvement: awards, prizes, presentations and publications.
