Job OverviewSubstantive community post in older adults psychiatry. Applicants may be considered for part‐time or job‐share arrangements. The post complements a team of consultant and trainee psychiatrists covering Bedfordshire and Luton, and is closely aligned with three other substantive older adults consultants in Bedford and the 26‐bedded inpatient unit at Fountains Court.Main Duties of the JobProvide clinical and professional leadership in the service.Ensure timely assessment and treatment of older adults with psychiatric disorders who require specialist services.Liaise promptly with patients, carers, community and other psychiatrist colleagues, general practitioners, and voluntary and statutory organisations to ensure high quality and well‐coordinated care.Liaise with other clinicians regarding the physical health of patients, and provide appropriate physical health assessment and review.Attend and lead weekly MDT meetings, supported by the operational lead.Practice within the recovery approach that places the service user at the centre of planning and decision‐making.Collaborate with other specialist teams to care for patients jointly under all services.Provide clinical supervision and training for junior medical staff and lead the multidisciplinary team.Deliver high quality care across all settings and meet quality targets set by the Trust and nationally.Person SpecificationQualificationsFully registered with the General Medical Council.Eligible for the GMC Specialist Register (or Specialist Registrar within 6 months of gaining CCT at time of interview).Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification.Eligible for Section 12 Approval (Mental Health Act) / Approved Clinician or willing to apply for such approval once in post.Desirable QualificationsA higher degree such as MD or PhD.Knowledge and Experience – EssentialExperience of clinical work in Perinatal Psychiatry at SpR, SASG or consultant level within the last 3 years.Excellent working knowledge and experience of the application of the Mental Health Act.Appreciation and understanding of ethnic minority issues and a commitment to culturally sensitive practices.Understanding of social factors relevant to psychiatry.Robust experience of working with severe and enduring mental illness and risk assessment, management.Desirable Knowledge and ExperienceExperience of service development and introducing new services in mental health.Experience of working at consultant level with physical health interface.Organisational Skills and Abilities – EssentialLeadership skills.Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary, multi‐model team.Ability to manage complex workloads and support others to do that.Consultation skills to services, teams and mitment to working in multidisciplinary mitment to working with service users on service development.Desirable Organisational SkillsFormal leadership and management training.Experience of team /service leadership.Experience of organisational development work.Project management ability.Clinical Skills and Supervision – EssentialAbility to work in a multi‐disciplinary team and provide leadership for the team.Self‐motivating and innovative.Expertise in risk assessment.Confident in therapeutic risk mitment to clinical governance.Teaching – EssentialExperience in teaching junior staff.Good teaching and communication skills.Experience of teaching medical undergraduates and postgraduates.Experience of teaching non‐medical mental health professionals.Research and Audit – EssentialExperience of research work, or ability to interpret research findings and apply them to clinical practice.Audit experience.Other Requirements – EssentialUK driving licence.Other Reasons To ApplyWe offer flexible working arrangements including part‐time, job‐share and other flexible patterns.
