VCU Health in Richmond, VA is seeking an inaugural Chair of the Department of Urology. The Department became a standalone entity in 2025 and now includes 13 faculty, 10 APPs, and 15 residents across Adult and Pediatric Urology, supported by a transformative philanthropic gift that enhances research time, resident expansion, and medical student engagement.Built on a mission of compassionate care, rigorous training, and cutting-edge discovery, the Department delivers comprehensive expertise in urologic oncology, endourology, reconstructive surgery, men's health, urogynecology, neuro-urology, and the full spectrum of pediatric urology. Faculty lead a broad portfolio of clinical and basic science research-including bladder smooth muscle physiology and clinical trials in oncology and minimally invasive surgery-supported by two dedicated laboratories and robust institutional partnerships. With a recently expanded residency program and a strong culture of collaboration across VCU Health and the Children's Hospital of Richmond, this is a unique opportunity to shape the future of a rapidly advancing academic department.POSITION SUMMARYThe Chair of the Department of Urology reports to the Dean of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. The Chair will direct the patient care, research, and education missions of the Department while providing leadership in integrating clinical, educational, and research programs to promote a strong academic department. The Chair will be responsible for establishing a bold vision for the Department that includes continued development of the clinical enterprise to a nationally prominent level, recruiting additional faculty who embrace the potential for growth and expansion of both the clinical and research enterprises, and maintaining fully accredited, high-quality residency and fellowship programs.KEY RESPONSIBILITIESProvide visionary, inclusive, and innovative leadership, while listening well and communicating effectively, to help the Department thrive and prosper in its clinical, educational, and research missions.Provide the vision and leadership to achieve superior clinical programs within urology and associated disciplines. Work closely and collaboratively with the other VCU Health System and School of Medicine leaders to integrate areas of acknowledged clinical excellence with outstanding quality, outcomes, and patient satisfaction.Ensure delivery of excellent clinical education and advanced training to medical students, residents, and fellows. Provide leadership and oversight to the residency and fellowship programs within the Department and ensure learners are receiving comprehensive and balanced training and development opportunities.Recruit, hire, and retain outstanding faculty and Departmental leaders from a broad range of backgrounds.Ensure an atmosphere of respect, professional support, and development.Supervise, prepare, implement, and monitor the budget so that it encompasses all funding sources and complies with grant, legislative, and institutional guidelines.Possess financial acumen to effectively manage the practice across the range of required activities.Define and lead the research strategy, supporting principal investigators and other faculty within the Department in efforts to secure NIH and other grant funding and ensuring deliberate investment into research activities and priorities to promote growth and facilitate future success.CANDIDATE PROFILEThe position of Chair of the Department of Urology requires a dynamic, passionate, and capable physician leader with a proven track record across the spectrum of collaborative clinical leadership, administrative experience, program development, individual scholarship, educational excellence, faculty recruitment, and community engagement. Experience in managing inpatient and outpatient clinical areas is preferred.Education, Certification, and LicensureOutstanding credentials and a record of academic accomplishments within urology. MD/DO degree and board certification in urology are required. Eligible for medical licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
