BLUE RIDGE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICTPosition Title: Finance Specialist FLSA Status: Exempt (12-Month Position) Reports to: Business Manager Position Summary: The Finance Specialist position assists in streamlining the financial processes of the district. This position ensures accuracy, compliance, and efficiency in accounting operations, supports budget maintenance, and provides financial analysis to optimize the use of district resources in support of educational objectives. We are seeking a team-oriented individual who enjoys working in a collaborative office environment and consistently demonstrates a positive, professional attitude. Credentials/Experience: Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field (preferred) Minimum of 3 years of experience in accounting, finance, or a related area, preferably in an educational or public sector environment Proficiency in financial software, spreadsheet applications, and data management systems Knowledge of governmental accounting standards and school finance regulations (preferred) Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Financial Management and Reporting: Prepare, analyze, and share financial reports, including monthly reconciliations, budget status updates, and year-end financial statements. Monitor expenditures to ensure compliance with district policies and state/federal regulations. Compliance and Audits: Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, including those related to grants and categorical funding. Coordinate internal and external audits, providing necessary documentation and responses to findings. Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to streamline financial operations and implement process improvements. Develop and document financial procedures to ensure consistency and compliance. Support and Training: Provide training and support to staff on financial processes, budgeting, and the use of financial systems. Act as a resource for schools and departments regarding financial matters. Communication and Collaboration: Maintain open and effective communication with all stakeholders, including administrators, staff, and external agencies. Collaborate with other district departments to support the financial needs of schools and programs. Required Skills and Abilities: Strong knowledge of accounting principles and financial management practices Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills Effective written and verbal communication skills Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities Proficiency with financial software and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel Preferred Qualifications: Experience with school district financial operations or public sector accounting Knowledge of state funding formulas, grants, and categorical programs Working Conditions: Office environment with occasional travel to trainings and conferences May require extended hours during peak periods such as budget preparation or audits
