Candidates must be willing to be away for 3-4 months at a time in different regions. Operate a test vehicle or detector car on and off railroad tracks. Perform vehicle inspections and equipment setups. Record and interpret data using computer monitors. Conduct maintenance and repairs on the vehicle and detector carriage, which may require crawling into tight spaces. Climb steps and ladders to enter/exit the vehicle and perform ground examinations of rails. Personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, steel-toed boots, hard hats, and safety vests, is mandatory. Additional safety gear may be necessary when handling vehicle fluids. You will be required to complete Road Worker Safety training annually. Working Conditions: All work is performed in the field under varying weather conditions. Safety: Follow all safety policies to maintain a secure working environment and report any hazards to supervisors. Essential Functions: Operate: Drive the detector car, assist crew members with measurements, and manage test equipment on the rail line. Identify: Observe car and track conditions, test data, and equipment functionality. Communicate: Convey information clearly to team members using verbal and radio communication to ensure safety. Maintain: Inspect and perform maintenance on the vehicle, ensuring cleanliness and functionality. Physical Requirements: Work may include: Maintaining awkward body positions under the vehicle. Walking on uneven surfaces and climbing steps frequently. Grasping tools and reaching for gauges. Prolonged periods of sitting while operating the vehicle. Visual acuity for tracking signals and reading data. Auditory capabilities for communication and alert sounds. Driving: Practice safe driving techniques and follow DOT regulations. Maintenance: Assist with vehicle maintenance and repairs. Ensure compliance with preventative maintenance and inspection schedules. Customer Interaction: Work cooperatively with railway personnel and address any complaints promptly. Input necessary data into the reporting system. Qualifications BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Valid CDL Class A or B with air brake endorsement. Strong communication skills. Basic mechanical skills. Ability to lift up to 85 lbs and assist with heavier loads. Capacity to work in confined spaces with low clearance. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Two years of commercial driving experience.
