Job Description

Join our team as an Optometric Assistant, where you will play a crucial role in enhancing patient care and supporting our doctors. Your responsibilities will include performing preliminary evaluations, assisting with diagnostic testing, and ensuring a smooth appointment schedule for a positive patient experience. Conduct preliminary evaluations of patients, including tasks such as dilation, administering topicals, and using diagnostic medications and equipment like Optomap. Engage in a verbal interview with patients to gather their medical history and reason for visit, facilitating effective communication with the Optometrist. Input patient information accurately into our Electronic Health Records (EEHR). Support Optometrists by managing patient care efficiently, adhering to the scheduled appointments as closely as possible. Educate patients on their prescribed treatment plans and schedule follow-up appointments appropriately. Discuss LASIK options with interested patients by reviewing their information forms. Coordinate referral appointments with Ophthalmologists and other specialists, along with necessary paperwork. Maintain patient records in compliance with HIPAA and company policies. Address patient inquiries over the phone regarding medications and treatments, directing them to the Optometrist as needed. Accurately code procedures for billing and payment collection. Execute diagnostic testing using specialized equipment such as OCT, Visual Field, and Retinal Camera. Correspond with internal and external doctor offices regarding patient and insurance referrals. Assist in patient education as directed by the Optometrist. Document medical findings in the Electronic Medical Records and aid in clerical tasks related to medical documentation. Participate in practice meetings and projects when requested. Ensure maximum utilization of the Optometrists’ time by confirming daily appointments and reaching out to patients for recalls. Follow up with all patients who have missed or canceled appointments to reschedule. Conduct contact lens insertion and removal classes and manage the trial inventory. Complete end-of-day responsibilities including schedule wrap-up and checklist completion. Recommend process improvements to enhance quality, efficiency, or profitability within the practice. Perform other duties as assigned within the practice. High School diploma or GED is required. Basic computer skills, including familiarity with MS Office, Windows, and word processing. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, prioritizing team goals. Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective interaction with both co-workers and patients. Preferred Qualifications: Experience in patient evaluations for eye exams and dispensing medications. Knowledge of medical terminology related to eye treatments. Experience in maintaining patient records according to HIPAA standards. Certification (CPO, CPOA, CPOT) is preferred but not required. Physical Demands: This role requires effective communication, utilizing necessary equipment, and mobility throughout the office environment.
