The U.S. Border Patrol is actively looking for candidates ready to take on full-time entry-level roles with strong potential for growth in the Law Enforcement Officer profession. Salary and Benefits The annual base salary for new recruits is competitive, starting at: GL-5/GL-7 $49,739 - $89,518 per year. Local duty assignments may influence pay, with certain areas offering higher locality adjustments. Experienced Border Security Officers may qualify for added compensation of up to 25% under the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. There are opportunities for salary advancement through GL-5, GL-7, GL-9, GS-11, and GS-12 levels, with promotions available after successfully completing 52 weeks in each grade. Border Security Officers enjoy an array of federal employment advantages, including health, dental, and various insurance options, a generous leave policy, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan, which acts like a traditional ROTH 401(k). Recruitment Incentive Newly appointed Border Security Officers may be eligible for up to $20,000 in incentives, which includes $10,000 upon successful completion of training and an additional $10,000 for accepting positions in prioritized regions. Retention Incentive Officers may qualify for up to $40,000 in retention bonuses over their first four years of service. Duties and Responsibilities As a Border Security Officer, you'll play a crucial role in protecting the American public by ensuring border security, deterring illegal activities, and supporting national economic growth. Your day-to-day responsibilities may include: Identifying and questioning individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs regulations while inspecting necessary documentation. Preventing and apprehending undocumented individuals and smugglers through advanced surveillance techniques. Interpreting physical evidence of illegal entries and conducting inspections of farms, buildings, and vehicular traffic. Patrolling borders and coastal regions utilizing various government assets to fulfill the U.S. Border Patrol mission. Qualifications For GL-5 grade level: Applicants should possess: One year of general work experience demonstrating sound decision-making and stress management capabilities, or A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, or A combination of relevant work experience and education. For GL-7 grade level: Candidates must demonstrate: One year of specialized experience relevant to law enforcement duties, or A bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement in law enforcement or a full year of graduate education in the field. Other Requirements Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen to apply. Residency: Must have lived in the U.S. for three of the past five years. Age Restriction: Applicants must be referred before their 40th birthday unless exempt due to prior applicable service. Military Preference: Candidates eligible for Veterans' Preference are exempt from age restrictions. Training: New recruits will undergo comprehensive training at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy for approximately six months, covering essential law enforcement skills, legal knowledge, physical training, and language proficiency development.
