About the Role Co-op Food Stores is seeking an experienced and collaborative Controller to lead our day-to-day accounting operations. Reporting to the Director of Finance, this role ensures accurate financial reporting in accordance with GAAP, maintains strong internal controls, and manages a team of three accounting professionals. Duties and Responsibilities Leadership & Management • Maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls • Partner with teams across the organization • Coach and develop accounting staff, supporting growth and advancement • Accounting Operations • Oversee month-end and year-end close • Ensure timely AP, AR, payroll, debt payments, and reconciliations • Maintain chart of accounts, inventory costing, and financial records Reporting & Analysis • Prepare accurate monthly financial statements for leadership and the Board • Support budgeting, variance analysis, and financial decision-making • Assist with annual reporting and key financial metrics Compliance • Coordinate annual audits • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal reporting and tax requirements Desired Skills, Experience and Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, or equivalent experience • 6+ years of progressive accounting experience (retail or multi-location a plus) • 3+ years managing an accounting team • CPA or CMA required • Strong Excel skills and experience with accounting systems (Acumatica preferred) • Organized, detail-oriented and collaborative Benefits • Health, dental vision, life and short-term disability • 4 weeks vacation, 10 sick days and 6 paid holidays • 401(k) savings program with automatic company contribution • 20% discount off groceries and car repairs • Eight volunteer hours per year • Employee Assistance program
