Salary: $62,289.00 Annually Location : Des Moines, IA Job Type: Full-Time Regular Job Number: 26-1088 Department: County Attorney's Office Opening Date: 02/26/2026 Closing Date: 3/6/2026 11:59 PM Central FLSA: Non-Exempt Bargaining Unit: PAA Hours: 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM (Sat/Sun Off) Bargaining Unit: AFSCME/Paraprofessional Salary Grade: 9 Location: Justice Center Annex Under general supervision, provides direct support services to crime victims and witnesses; provides information, notification, and assistance to victims and witnesses regarding rights and benefits per Iowa Code and related statues; serves as a liaison between victims, witnesses, the County Attorney's Office, the court system, Polk County Victim Services, law enforcement, and other involved parties to promote access, understanding, and engagement through the legal process. Illustrative Examples of WorkInitiates and maintains contact with victims, witnesses, and families to provide case updates, explain legal procedures, and ensure awareness of rights and protections under Iowa law; assists with Victim Impact Statement and applications for compensation benefits. Conducts interviews to gather factual information; prepares documentation for case files; coordinates witness availability for trials, hearings, and depositions; offers court preparation and logistical support, including protective order filings and transportation arrangements; may testify in court proceedings. Refers victims to Polk County Crisis and Advocacy Services and other community resources; acts as liaison among victims, witnesses, attorneys, law enforcement, and service provides to ensure coordinated support. Schedules and facilitates meetings between the victims and offenders under the Victim Offender Dialogue Program (VODP), ensuring appropriate preparation and follow-up. Participates in regular case review meetings with Polk County Crisis and Advocacy Services staff; may attend hearings and trials upon request of attorneys or victims. Prepares and distributes written communications (forms, letters, brochures, etc.) to notify victims and witnesses of scheduled proceedings and case developments. Maintains accurate records, reports, and case files; compiles statistical data and enters information into case management systems. Performs other duties as assigned. Required Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of legal procedures, court systems, and victim's rights legislation. Knowledge of community-based human services and victim support programs. Knowledge of the unique needs and challenges faced by crime victims and witnesses. Proficiency in using computers and software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and case management tools. Ability to interpret and explain legal processes and available services in a clear and compassionate manner. Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism. Ability to build rapport with victims and witnesses, including those experiencing trauma or reluctance to participate. Ability to remain composed and supportive in high-stress or emotionally charged situations. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to use diplomacy and empathy to encourage cooperation and engagement. Ability to prepare and maintain accurate reports, records, and correspondence. Ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse cultures and socio-economic status. Ability to establish effective working relationships with law enforcement personnel, representatives from community social service agencies, and the general public, fostering a collaborative and professional work environment. Training and ExperienceAssociate's Degree in Human Services, Criminal Justice, or related field, and One year of experience in the criminal justice system, court administration, social services, or related field, or Any equivalent combination of training and experience that will have provided the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Depending on assigned position, bi-lingual (English/Spanish) skills are required. Other language skills (Arabic, Vietnamese, or other languages) are preferred. Bachelor's Degree in Sociology, Psychology, Human Services, or closely related field is preferred. Special Requirements: A drug screen is required prior to final offer of employment.
