DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS The Landscape Maintenance Worker is distinguished from the Landscape Maintenance Supervisor who has more specialized knowledge of arborist and horticulture practices, and who prioritizes and provides direction supervision of work crews. Inspects, adjusts, and maintains irrigation systems, including clocks, controllers, and automatic systems; reads blueprints to locate pipes, valves, time clocks and sprinkler heads. 2. Propagates seeds, plants, bulbs, cuttings, trees, turf, shrubs and nursery stock; braces cables, prepares soil, and monitors growth given watering cycle and growth rates. 3. Prepares and applies pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers and other plant pest and disease eradication and control chemicals. 4. Grades, drags, lines, and waters ball diamonds and cleans and replaces mounds and bases; lays out and maintains baseball, softball, football, and soccer fields, and basketball and tennis courts. 5. Operates grounds keeping equipment, including lawnmowers, edgers, hedge trimmers, groomers, trucks and tractors. Mows, edges, sweeps and rakes public park and recreation areas. Performs minor mechanical adjustments and preventive maintenance and repairs of tools and equipment, conducts daily inspection of vehicles and safety hazards and reports needed repairs. 7. Performs park and playground inspections and reports deficiencies; adjusts and repairs play equipment. 8. Operates a variety of equipment such as aerial lift truck, mowers, skip loaders, backhoes, chain saws, weed eaters, pressure washer, chipper, trencher, and tractors with attachments such as fertilizers, aerifiers and seeders. 9. Prepares and coordinates use of facilities for public and recreation events. 10.Performs minor carpentry, plumbing, painting, and electrical work in maintaining restroom facilities and parks structures and vandalism and graffiti problems. 11.Performs custodial duties in maintaining park structures, benches, restrooms and other public facilities. 12.Serves on call and responds to emergency situations and maintenance needs and may work extended hours on weekdays and weekends. Typical QualificationsKnowledge of: Automated and manual irrigation systems and components including use of back-flow prevention devices; plumbing and pipe fitting techniques, tools, materials and installation, maintenance and troubleshooting methods; basic tools, materials, equipment and procedures used in parks and grounds maintenance work; care, cultivation, propagation, and maintenance of trees, shrubs, flowers and plants; plant pests and diseases and control techniques; safe work practices; basic carpentry, painting, plumbing and electrical work. Ability to: Read and interpret irrigation and landscape blueprints and specifications; analyze and resolve irrigation problems in the field; perform heavy manual labor; perform a wide variety of gardening, park, grounds maintenance and building maintenance work; properly layout and maintain sports fields; utilize hand and power tools in performing carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical and grounds maintenance work; repair, install and maintain sprinkler systems and make minor repairs and adjustments in assigned equipment; work effectively with minimal supervision; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others. Education/Training/Experience: Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent. Experience: One year of experience in park maintenance, sports field maintenance, grounds keeping, or general maintenance work is required. Additional irrigation systems experience, and specialized assignments is desirable. Licenses/Certificates/Special Requirements: A valid Class C California driver's license, acceptable driving record, and proof of insurance in compliance with the City's Vehicle Insurance Policy standards. A current Backflow Prevention Device Testers certificate issued by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Cross-Connection & Water Pollution Control Program, is desirable. A State of California Qualified Applicator certificate is desirable. A Certified Playground Safety Inspector license is desirable.
