Furthermore, agents can earn up to $40,000 in retention incentives within their first four years of service. Essential Duty Considerations Agents are often assigned to critical duty locations primarily along the Southwest Border, which may necessitate relocation. Additional locality pay for federal law enforcement can enhance base salaries by up to 25%. You have the potential for regular promotions every 52 weeks, provided you meet the necessary performance criteria. Your Key Responsibilities As a Federal Law Enforcement Agent, you will be instrumental in securing our borders and enhancing economic safety. Your role may involve: Detecting and questioning individuals suspected of immigration violations. Preventing and apprehending undocumented noncitizens and smugglers. Maintaining surveillance and conducting patrols in challenging environments. Performing traffic checks and city patrol activities. Utilizing various government resources to enhance border protection efforts. Qualifications for Success To qualify for the GL-5 level, candidates must have: One year of general work experience that demonstrates decision-making abilities and composure in challenging circumstances. Educational credentials such as a bachelor’s degree or a combination of education and experience. For the GL-7 level, candidates require: Specialized work experience reflecting skills in law enforcement decision-making. An educational background that includes a bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement. Additional requirements include: U.S. citizenship with primary residency in the U.S. for at least three of the last five years. Applicants must apply before their 40th birthday.
