Job Description

Culinary Specialists (CSs) play a crucial role in managing food services and accommodations for Navy personnel at sea and onshore. They are foundational to the morale of the Navy, operating dining facilities known as 'mess decks' and providing catering services for senior officials, including the President of the United States. Responsibilities: Design and prepare nutritious menus. Order and manage food supplies efficiently. Maintain accurate financial records and inventory of food items. Provide personal food service for commanding officers and senior naval officials. Oversee shipboard living quarters and shore-based accommodations. Function as flight attendant aircrew, ensuring exceptional service at all times. What to Expect: Culinary Specialists work in dynamic environments, including kitchens, dining areas, and food storerooms. The role is both physically demanding and mentally stimulating, requiring strong teamwork and attention to detail. Work Environment: CSs typically spend around 60% of their careers assigned to fleet units and 40% at shore stations. Their workplaces range from shipboard galleys to mess decks and other facilities, often in fast-paced settings. Training & Advancement: Following Recruit Training, CSs undergo a seven-week training program in Fort Lee, VA, focusing on food preparation, nutrition, and dining service principles. Opportunities for advancement and additional technical training are abundant for qualified individuals. Education Opportunities: CSs can earn college credits for their training and can access degree programs through the United States Naval Community College (USNCC), including a Naval Studies Certificate, aiding their educational and professional growth. Qualifications & Requirements: To succeed as a CS, candidates should demonstrate: Strong teamwork skills and a passion for engaging with others. Solid arithmetic and verbal communication skills. Creativity and an interest in culinary arts and nutrition. Detail-oriented work ethic with the ability to follow strict instructions.
