Location Hartford,WI Description Our client, a multi-division transportation and logistics company is seeking an experienced Controller to lead financial operations across their multi-entity organization that includes trucking and transportation, freight brokerage, and warehousing operations. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and sound fiscal management to support business performance and strategic decision-making. The Controller will oversee the accounting function, drive process improvements, and serve as a trusted financial partner to leadership as the business continues to grow. Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Management & Reporting Oversee two direct reports and all day-to-day accounting activities, including A/R, A/P, payroll, general ledger, and month-end close Consolidate financial statements across trucking, brokerage, warehousing and leasing entities Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports and KPIs Ensure accuracy of P&Ls, balance sheets, and cash flow statements for each business unit Lead budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis across all operations Cost Control & Operational Support Develop and maintain cost models for trucking operations (fuel, maintenance, driver pay, equipment depreciation, etc.) Support brokerage margin analysis and profitability tracking Oversee financial management for warehousing operations, including labor, storage revenue, and inventory controls Partner with operations leaders to monitor performance metrics and identify cost-saving and efficiency opportunities Compliance, Controls & Audit Ensure compliance with GAAP, federal/state regulations, and industry-specific requirements (e.g., IFTA, IRP, DOT-related reporting) Support HR with financial documentation related to regulatory compliance Maintain and continuously improve internal controls, policies, and procedures Coordinate annual audits, tax filings, and external reporting with third-party CPAs Cash Management & Financial Strategy Manage cash flow, banking relationships, and credit facilities Monitor working capital, collections, vendor terms, and cash positioning Provide financial insights to support strategic planning, capital investments, and risk management Systems & Process Improvement Oversee accounting and financial systems, including TMS, B2E payroll, and QuickBooks/Sage Peachtree Implement automation and process improvements to enhance accuracy and efficiency Ensure alignment and integration of financial data across trucking, brokerage, and warehouse systems Leadership & Team Development Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team Foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, collaboration, and continuous improvement Serve as a trusted financial advisor to leadership with clear, proactive insights QualificationsRequired Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field 5+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience; transportation, logistics, or warehousing experience strongly preferred Solid understanding of trucking and brokerage financial structures (settlements, margins, fuel, compliance-related costs) Proficiency with accounting, payroll, and enterprise systems Demonstrated experience managing and leading a department Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and organizational ability Excellent written and verbal communication skills Preferred CPA or CMA certification Experience with TMS/WMS platforms Background in multi-entity or consolidated reporting Exposure to warehousing financial operations Core Competencies Strategic financial leadership Team management and mentorship Operational awareness within trucking and logistics Integrity and strong ethical standards Problem-solving and process improvement Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, growing organization Working Environment On-site, office-based role with close collaboration across operations, dispatch, warehouse management, and executive leadership
