Description The Mechanic performs general overhaul and repair work on light and heavy duty trucks, gasoline and diesel motors, tractors, graders, fire trucks and other automotive and mechanical equipment of mechanical equipment for the City of Ottumwa. Responsible for making all types of repairs to automotive equipment in accordance with standard trade practices. Employees work under general supervision using independent judgment as to diagnosis and method of repair. This will be required to work overtime (as needed) including weekends and holidays. Functional specific responsibilities might include: Solid Waste Operating Mechanic - stationed at the Landfill but splits time between the Landfill and Recycling Center. The successful candidate will possess the following: Education/Training/Certifications High School diploma or equivalent Possess and maintain valid Commercial Driver's license "Class A" along with Air Brake Restriction removed and tanker endorsement added Must obtain within six months of employment (dependent on availability of training program) Two years' experience as an automotive mechanic preferred Knowledge / Skills / Abilities Knowledge of safe working practices, safety data sheets, air-monitoring equipment, and ability to detect potential hazards Knowledge of modern methods, tools and equipment of the automotive mechanical trade; operating principles and mechanics of the internal combustion engines Working knowledge of automotive mechanics and diesel repair Working knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and servicing specialized maintenance and construction equipment To review the full job description, please go to
