Job Description: SUNY Oneonta and the School of Sciences invite applications for the position of Coordinator of Science Outreach Activities. Reporting to the Dean of Sciences, the Coordinator will oversee the daily operations of the University's science outreach facilities, including the Science Discovery Center (SDC) and the campus planetarium. The successful candidate will provide visionary leadership to elevate interdisciplinary science communication and applied, science-based learning across campus and throughout the region. The SDC serves the community as a free, hands-on museum for individuals of all ages and abilities, connecting visitors to the scientific process through authentic, interactive exhibits and functioning as a vital regional resource for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). Together, the SDC and the Planetarium support the University's strategic emphasis on experiential learning, an area in which SUNY Oneonta is recognized in national rankings. The School of Sciences offers excellent science communication facilities and equipment, including a Digistar planetarium, observatory with a 40-inch telescope, and the SDC, featuring interactive solar panels, augmented reality sandbox and OmniGlobe. To learn more about the University, the School of Sciences, and the Science Discovery Center (SDC), please visit and Duties include but are not limited to: Directing and managing the daily operations, maintenance, and administrative functions of the SDC, including budgeting, data collection, training, and student supervision while ensuring consistent operational hours and the successful delivery of signature programs. Coordinating with planetarium staff to schedule, publicize, and present planetarium programs for public, collegiate, and K-12 audiences. Collaborating with faculty, community partners, and institutional stakeholders to develop, implement, and expand a dynamic, multidisciplinary portfolio of public, collegiate, and K-12-focused programming and exhibits that communicates science to diverse audiences. Establishing and maintaining partnerships with regional museums and science centers and community organizations to enhance local economic vibrancy and actively contribute to the region's identity as a thriving cultural hub. Leading outreach, marketing, and communication efforts, including social media engagement, to promote programs and increase participation among schools and the public. Providing SUNY Oneonta students with experiential learning opportunities in public STEAM outreach through internships and volunteer positions that support the development of effective science communication skills. Advancing the financial sustainability of the SDC by participating in grant writing and fundraising initiatives and the development of external funding sources. Performing duties that require regular weekend and occasional evening work, and carrying out other related responsibilities as assigned in support of the School of Sciences and University goals. Salary: $57,151 - $60,000 commensurate with experience. SUNY Oneonta is a Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) qualifying employer. Requirements: Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline, education, museum studies, or a related field. Experience in public programming and events management. Knowledge of museum education and best practices. Preferred: Master's degree in STEM discipline, education, museum studies, or a related field. Experience working in a museum or planetarium. Experience working with K-12 school groups or faculty. Experience writing grants. Experience fund raising. Experience working with and serving diverse populations.
