Job purpose This position carries out tasks related to maintenance of facilities and recreation programs as defined by the Superintendent of Parks and Recreation. Duties and responsibilities Working under the direct supervision of the Superintendent of Parks and Recreation, this position requires task planning and direct execution of technical duties to assist with park operations: Operate equipment and tools to maintain park land and structures Observe and report status of park facilities and habitat Assist with educational and recreation programs Perform routine cleaning and restocking of restroom facilities Performs clerical duties as required. Qualifications Knowledge of and physical ability to operate tools and equipment normally used in park maintenance. Demonstrated ability to verbally communicate with other people in an effective manner. Must be at least 16 years old and possess a valid driver's license and personal transportation. A minimum of one-year work experience in park maintenance or related field is preferred. Valid driver's license Working conditionsThe position will be part time and scheduling will fit the needs of the department including weekday, weekend, or evening hours. Typical shifts are 4-8 hours on a seasonal basis. This position requires the ability to work outdoors in a variety of natural terrains and weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, extreme heat or cold, snow, sleet, ice, wind. Environmental Conditions and Safety Concerns Incumbent performs a majority of duties outdoors and in a vehicle, and is frequently exposed to, normal hazards associated with maintaining rights-of-way, such as machinery, traffic, noise, grease, dirt, dust, vehicle fumes, blood borne pathogens and other infectious materials, extreme temperatures and inclement weather. Safety precautions must be followed at all times to avoid injury to self and others. Physical requirements Use of tools and equipment as trained for normal park maintenance. Most work will take place outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. The technician's work in the parks will bring him/her into casual contact with the public. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to walk, sit, talk, hear, finger dexterity, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, and bend over. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
