This contract role requires a registered nurse with significant hands-on experience in a fast-paced ICU setting, providing critical care to complex surgical cases. The Surgical ICU unit is a 10-bed specialty area using Cerner EMR, with nurse-patient ratios typically ranging from 1:1 to 1:2. This position offers the opportunity to utilize advanced clinical skills including EKG interpretation, ventilator management, and line placements in a supportive environment with hospitalists and intensivists on site. Qualifications and Desired Experience: Active California RN license Minimum 2 years ICU nursing experience, with a surgical ICU background preferred Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications Experience managing patients recovering from vascular surgeries such as CEA, fem-pop, EVARs, thoracic surgeries, and laparotomies Comfort working with telemetry, ventilators, and post-operative critical care interventions including CRRT and ECMO Able to float occasionally to other local facilities as needed Responsibilities: Deliver high-quality, patient-centered care within a surgical ICU setting Monitor hemodynamic status and interpret diagnostic data including EKG strips Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including hospitalists, intensivists, respiratory therapists, and pharmacy Serve as charge nurse when assigned, providing break relief and coordinating care activities Participate in weekend and holiday rotations as part of a core staffing model Engage in unit-based orientation with a preceptor and ongoing professional development Shift Details and Scheduling: 12-hour shifts starting at 6:45 AM, with bedside report Self-scheduling system with manager oversight and options to pick up extra shifts Weekend requirement every other weekend; holiday rotation shared among staff Occasional mid-shift float is rare but possible Location Insight: Sacramento offers a vibrant urban lifestyle with access to nature, cultural attractions, and a mild Mediterranean climate.
