With placements available in the City Attorney's Office, Human Resources, Engineering, the Water Laboratory, and the City Clerk's Office, interns gain meaningful exposure to how municipal departments collaborate to support a well-functioning, community-focused organization. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is a temporary part-time, training classification in which students with current enrollment in college with course work related to the area assigned can gain experience in assisting city staff in the performance of professional administrative or technical duties. AVAILABLE INTERNSHIP ORRORTUNITIES CITY ATTORNEY'S OFFICE This opportunity is designed for a college student interested in law, public policy, or government service who wants hands-on exposure to municipal legal work. Interns will conduct legal and statutory research, draft legal memoranda, and learn the fundamentals of court processes and procedures while supporting attorneys on active matters. Additional responsibilities may include reviewing documents, organizing case files, and assisting with day-to-day office tasks. This internship provides meaningful mentorship and practical experience that helps prepare students for future careers in the legal field. Preferred Major(s): Legal Studies/Pre-Law, Criminal Justice Hours: 16-20 Hours per Week Internship Duration: 6 - 8 Weeks CITY CLERK'S OFFICE This opportunity is designed for a college student interested in public administration, political science, law, or government operations who wants hands-on experience in municipal administration. Interns will assist with high-level elections work, including compiling packets, organizing records, and supporting the documentation required for transparent election processes. They will also contribute to special projects such as the Council Chambers upgrade, modernization of the administrative hearing process, and review of the Boards and Commissions recruitment workflow. Additional responsibilities include general administrative support and direct exposure to how the Clerk's Office serves the public, offering a strong foundation for careers in government, policy, or administrative services. Preferred Major(s): Public Administration, Political Science Hours: 20 Hours per Week Internship Duration: 12 Weeks CITY MANAGER'S OFFICE, GRAND THEATRE This opportunity is designed for a college student interested in arts administration, event management, theatre operations, or public-sector cultural programming who wants hands-on experience in a dynamic performing arts environment. Interns will assist with season planning, event coordination, and operational support for the Grand Theatre Center for the Arts. Responsibilities include helping finalize preparations for the 20th Season Kick-Off, supporting the Season Announcement, and performing front-of-house (FOH) duties during performances and community events. Additional responsibilities may include artist and vendor coordination, scheduling support, audience services, and general administrative tasks related to programming and facility operations. This internship provides practical experience in live event logistics, customer service, and arts management, along with professional mentorship to help prepare students for a career in theatre operations or public-sector arts administration. Preferred Major(s): Arts Administration, Theatre Operations, Event Management Hours: 10 - 15 Hours per Week Internship Duration: 12 Weeks HUMAN RESOURCES This opportunity is designed for a college student interested in human resources, public administration, or organizational development who wants hands-on experience in a municipal HR setting. Interns will assist with digitalizing and organizing personnel files, support project management tasks for staff events, and help update HR webpages and online resources. Additional responsibilities may include general office support, data entry, document preparation, and exposure to recruitment, training, and employee engagement activities. This internship provides practical experience and professional mentorship to help prepare students for a career in HR or public-sector administration. Preferred Major(s): Human Resource Management, Business Administration Hours: 20 Hours per Week Internship Duration: 12 Weeks PUBLIC WORKS ENGINEERING This opportunity is for a college student pursuing civil engineering, construction management, or a related field to support active infrastructure projects. In addition to document management and project filing, the intern will scan and organize as-built drawings, assist with traffic data collection, and support engineers with technical and construction-related tasks. Fieldwork will include site visits, coordination with inspection staff, and exposure to real-world problem solving on water, wastewater, roadway, traffic, and vertical infrastructure projects. This internship offers meaningful, hands-on municipal experience and professional mentorship to help prepare students for a career in public-sector engineering. Preferred Major(s): Civil Engineering Hours: 20 Hours per Week Internship Duration: Up to 6 Months PUBLIC WORKS UTILITES LABORATORY This opportunity is designed for a college student pursuing environmental science, chemistry, biology, or a related field who wants hands-on experience in a municipal laboratory setting. Interns will assist with collecting and preparing water and wastewater samples, enter analytical data into the WIMS database, and support the cleaning and maintenance of laboratory facilities. Additional responsibilities include receiving and organizing laboratory supplies and observing day-to-day testing procedures. This internship offers practical exposure to environmental compliance, laboratory operations, and the science behind essential public-sector water services. Minimum Qualifications Eligibility and Application Requirements Education: * Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university pursuing an applicable undergraduate or graduate degree related to the internship assignment applying for (e.g., Public Administration, Business Administration, Communications, Chemistry, Human Resources, or a closely related field). * Must maintain active enrollment for the full duration of the internship. Students who graduate before the internship ends are not eligible to continue in the program. Students must be in good academic standing as defined by the institution and must be able to provide proof of enrollment each term as requested. Experience: * No prior professional experience required; relevant coursework, volunteer work, or campus involvement is preferred. Other Requirements: * College Transcripts: Must submit undergraduate and/or graduate transcripts as applicable. Current or most recent GPA must be 3.0 or higher. * Cover Letter: Applicants must submit a cover letter expressing how their education and experience align with this internship and what they hope to gain from the experience. * Letter of Recommendation: Two (2) letters of recommendation - one of which must be from a current or former professor/advisor are required as part of this application.
