Job Posting:JR101227 Mental Health Counselor (Open)Department:Ctr for Counseling & Stu Devel , JMPosition Type:Non-Regular Fixed Term (Fixed Term)Open Date:03-25-2026Close Date:04-15-2026$70,000 AnnuallyJob Description:The Mental Health Counselor will assist the Director of Counseling by providing confidential evidence-based mental health counseling, consultation, and crisis intervention services that promote the well-being to students experiencing personal, social, and emotional difficulties that may impede functioning and academic progress. Services will be provided both in-person and via telehealth. This position will work closely with team members from our medical and health promotion colleagues, Residential Life, and Student Affairs, along with faculty, and staff from across the campus.Responsibilities:Provide direct clinical services including individual, and group counselingConduct assessments of at-risk clients, consult on medical leave protocol, initiate emergency evaluation process, and make appropriate referrals if necessaryDevelop and support collaboration with the Vice President and Dean of Students Office, Health Services, Residential Life, Public Safety, Athletics, faculty, and other constituents as neededCommunicate with the campus community as necessary to inform of issues and trends relevant to the development and success of students around mental health concernsFacilitate trainings for key constituencies to include RA's Peer Mentors, Student-Athletes, etc.Actively participate in various professional activities and pursuits to remain current in the field and maintain requirements for certification/licensureRespond to campus emergencies as needed in a rotating on-call capacity; fulfill duties as prescribed in the Student Death ProtocolMaintain client records in a manner consistent with best practices for clinical counseling, and generate reports about students servedServe on committees as deemed appropriate by the Director of Counseling,Minimum Qualifications:EDUCATIONMaster's degree in social work, clinical psychology, counseling psychology or counseling.EXPERIENCEThe position requires licensure in a mental health field in Maryland or eligibility to practice in Maryland via PsyPactKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESStrong oral and written communication skills; exceptional organization and problem-solving skills.Ability to cultivate and maintain strong relationships and build consensus and support.Sensitivity to issues related to socioeconomic class, gender identity and expression, sexuality, race and ethnicity, privilege and power relationships, and transitions to adulthood.Ability to work evenings and weekends as required for programming elements of the position.Knowledge of best practices in departmental field.Ability to establish goals, structures, and processes necessary to implement a mission and strategic vision.Strategic and analytical thinking skills with an ability to solve problems and make decisions.Ability to prioritize ongoing and new projects, as well as conduct research and gather information.Conditions of Employment:Maintain regular attendance and closely follows office reporting policies and procedures.Coppin State University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer.
