The Respiratory Therapist, Registered or Certified, will utilize the application of scientific principles for theidentification, prevention, remediation, research, and rehabilitation of acute or chronic cardiopulmonarydysfunction thereby producing optimum health and function. They review existing data, collect additional data,and recommend obtaining data to evaluate the respiratory status of patients; they develop the respiratory careplan and determine the appropriateness of the prescribed therapy. They initiate, conduct, and modify prescribedtherapeutic and diagnostic procedures such as administering medical gases, humidification of aerosols or gases,aerosolized medications, postural drainage, bronchopulmonary hygiene, cardiopulmonary resuscitation; as wellas providing support services to mechanically ventilated patients, maintaining artificial and natural airways,performing pulmonary function testing and other physiologic monitoring, collecting specimens of blood andother materials. Documents necessary information in the patient's medical record and on other formsand communicates that information to members of the health care team. Obtains, assembles, calibrates, andchecks necessary equipment. Uses problem solving to identify and correct malfunctions or respiratory careequipment. Demonstrates appropriate interpersonal skills to work productively with patients, families, staff, andco-workers. Accepts directives, maintains confidentiality, does not discriminate, and upholds the ethical standardsof the profession.The RT may perform duties in Respiratory Therapy, EKG, and Pulmonary Departments, and while in thoseroles adhere to policy and procedure.Performs all duties under the Supervision of the Supervisor of Respiratory Services.The RT will be trained by the Respiratory Clinical Education Specialist and will seed the CES for those itemspertaining to performance of therapy and competency assessment in RT practices.The RT will look to the ABG Lab Coordinator for guidance in matters pertaining to ABGs including analyzeroperation and LIS interactions.The RT will consult with the Pulmonary Rehab Coordinator to receive guidance for outpatient pulmonarydiagnostics or rehabilitation concerns.RTs will be classified in three (3) categories, independent of credentialed status or financial department:Tier three (3) - new to OCH-RMC and unfamiliar with situational dynamics of respiratory or how weprovide services. Cannot function independently. Not eligible for transport functions or call.Tier two (2) - completed all phases of training and is learning situational dynamics of respiratoryservice and how we interact with the full spectrum of care at BMHOC-RMC. May attend transports andreceive other functional training.
