Job Description

Job Title: Lab Technician Job Description The Lab Technician tests production batches using defined methods, evaluates in-spec and out-of-spec data, and ensures products meet or exceed customer quality requirements. This role interprets test results and historical data, provides clear adjustment instructions to production teams, and supports the efficient, safe, and well-organized operation of the laboratory. The technician works with minimal supervision, contributes to continuous improvement of procedures, and helps maintain high standards of quality and safety across the facility. Responsibilities * Test production batches according to specific written testing methods and document all results accurately. * Interpret test results and historical data to verify that products meet or exceed customer quality specifications. * Approve batches only after confirming that all required tests are completed and meet established specifications before the next production process. * Enter all batch data into the electronic batch records system in a timely and accurate manner. * Generate all required paperwork and documentation in line with customer specifications and internal standards. * Gather and send customer samples as required, ensuring proper labeling, packaging, and documentation. * Follow all standard technical procedures, exercising sound judgment and initiative while working with minimal supervision. * Perform raw material testing when necessary and complete and file all related paperwork. * Gather, stock, and manage the product retain area to ensure proper retention and traceability of samples. * Use appropriate computer systems and laboratory software to support effective testing and data management. * Determine the disposition of non-compliant finished goods, including first case/last case evaluations, and document decisions. * Place non-conforming material on hold as needed and communicate status to relevant departments. * Support established management systems and safety systems by following procedures and contributing to continuous improvement. * Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies, restock items upon receipt, and request replenishment when supplies are low. * Maintain laboratory housekeeping standards and clean all test equipment regularly to ensure a safe and orderly workspace. * Adhere to all safety requirements, including proper handling of materials and use of personal protective equipment as required. * Identify and communicate product issues and quality concerns to production and other departments as needed. * Review batch slips for completeness and accuracy before processing and approval. * Create, maintain, and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the Quality Department to meet internal and external requirements. * Assist in training other lab technicians by sharing knowledge of procedures, equipment, and quality standards. * Perform additional related duties as assigned to support laboratory operations and overall production quality. Essential Skills * At least 1 year of laboratory-based experience performing material testing. * Experience with quality control practices in a laboratory or production environment. * Ability to follow detailed written testing methods and standard operating procedures. * Ability to interpret test results and historical data to make sound quality decisions. * Basic knowledge of chemistry or wet chemistry techniques used in a quality control lab. * Ability to use laboratory instruments such as viscometers, spectrometers, pH meters, and other QC testing equipment. * Ability to perform titrations and other standard laboratory tests accurately and consistently. * Competence with computer systems for data entry, electronic batch records, and documentation. * Strong attention to detail and accuracy in testing, documentation, and batch review. * Effective communication skills to relay test results and product issues to production and other departments. * Ability to work with minimal supervision while managing multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. * Must be at least 18 years of age. * Must be legally authorized to work in the country of employment without current or future sponsorship for employment work visa status. * Must have a high school diploma or GED. * Must have the ability to see color, with or without reasonable accommodation. * Must be willing to work overtime, with or without reasonable accommodation. Additional Skills & Qualifications * Experience in chemistry, laboratory science, or a related technical discipline is beneficial. * Experience in a paint, coatings, or similar manufacturing environment is an advantage. * Familiarity with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and quality management systems. * Experience with inspection and quality control processes in a production setting. * Ability to create, maintain, and update SOPs for quality and laboratory procedures. * Experience assisting with training or mentoring other lab technicians. * Comfort working with gas chromatography (GC) and other analytical instruments, where applicable. * Strong organizational skills for managing retain samples, lab inventory, and documentation. * Team-oriented mindset with a willingness to wear multiple hats and support colleagues as needed. Work Environment The laboratory operates within a paint manufacturing environment, where you can expect exposure to dusty and dirty conditions and occasional contact with paint materials. You will work closely with one other technician on your shift and remain in frequent communication with the production team to coordinate testing and resolve quality issues. The lab culture is laid-back yet highly collaborative, with a strong team mentality and an expectation that everyone supports one another and takes on multiple responsibilities as needed. The role involves hands-on work with laboratory instruments such as viscometers, spectrometers, pH meters, and other QC equipment, along with regular use of computer systems for electronic batch records and documentation. You should be comfortable working in an industrial setting, following all safety procedures, and wearing appropriate protective attire suitable for a manufacturing and laboratory environment. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Baltimore, MD. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $26.00/hr.
