Job Description

The Derré Laboratory in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is seeking a Laboratory Specialist to work on projects investigating the mechanisms supporting Chlamydia trachomatis infections. Under the supervision of the PI, the incumbent will participate in laboratory projects involving a combination of microbiology, cell biology, molecular biology, and microscopy techniques. Research activity conducted includes, but is not limited to, maintenance of eukaryotic cell lines, generation and amplification of Chlamydia strains, general molecular biology techniques (cloning and sequence analysis, immuno-precipitation and western-blot), image acquisition of Chlamydia infected cells by standard and confocal microscopy, image analysis using microscopy computer software. Minimum Qualifications: * Education: Bachelor's degree; may accept combination of experience/education/certification in lieu of degree. * Experience: 1+ year of relevant lab experience required. Preferred Qualifications: * Bachelor's degree in biological sciences * 3+ years of relevant experience in a research laboratory Preferred skills include: * Proficiency in molecular biology, including but not limited to PCR amplification, Western blotting, plasmid construction and cloning * Experience in cell culture and sterile microbiology techniques * Accuracy and attention to details * Work concurrently on several projects and meet deadlines * Demonstrated initiative in decision-making and problem solving * Computer skills (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), * Excellent written and verbal communication skills * Self-motivation and eager to acquire new skills Physical Demands: This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other benchwork and animal procedures requiring fine finger manipulation. This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance. This position is located in Charlottesville, Virginia. This is a full-time benefited position.
