To learn more about Roger Williams University's commitment and support of diversity and inclusion, please visit Job Description: Under the direction of the Natural Science Laboratory Manager, the Laboratory Technician will have the responsibility of assisting with the activities of the stockroom, including maintenance, and oversight of assigned laboratories in the Division of Mathematics and Science in the Feinstein School of Arts and Sciences. Laboratory Assistance Oversee and maintain assigned scientific equipment within the Marine and Natural Science Building (Chemistry, Marine Biology, and Biology Departments) as directed by the Natural Science Laboratory Manager. Maintain assigned instruments in proper working order and schedule maintenance and calibration checks to keep equipment in good working order to ensure safety of those using the lab equipment and to maintain the highest standard of equipment function. Purchasing Assist the Natural Science Laboratory Manager in maintaining inventory and, if needed, create and submit purchase requisitions for laboratory equipment, chemicals, biological substances, bio-specimens (including live), and hazardous materials for Chemistry, Biology, Science educational and research laboratories. Accept delivery of equipment, materials, specimens, and chemicals as requested by the stockroom and other MNS personnel and in conjunction with other stockroom personnel. Laboratory Support Assist the Natural Science Laboratory Manager with requests for Science Stockroom services by the faculty including requests for items to use in teaching laboratories, faculty research, and student research. Assemble daily laboratory set-ups for all Chemistry, Biology, and Science courses with instruments, hardware, chemicals, solutions, and live materials necessary to perform laboratory experiments in cooperation with other stockroom personnel. Provide support and materials for students working on independent research projects outside of formal lab periods. Develop lab procedures to facilitate the accomplishment of scientific investigation. Make recommendations to the Natural Science Laboratory Manager on improving/enhancing lab operational practices, as well as improving use of the laboratory equipment. Material Safety and Regulatory Compliance Follow correct safety procedures in the Science Stockroom and all laboratories to maintain a safe working environment. Assist the Natural Science Laboratory Manager in overseeing the safe storage and disposal of chemical and biological waste generated in the MNS laboratories. File and update Material Safety Data Sheets for all chemicals and hazardous biological waste. Handle chemicals and biological materials on a regular basis and carries out laboratory waste management tasks following safety and University policies and guidelines. Requirements: Bachelors of Arts or Sciences in Biology, Chemistry or Physics. Directly related laboratory experience. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Possess awareness of any impact on safety as hazardous conditions may be encountered. Ability to prioritize projects based on workload, manage multiple responsibilities, meet deadlines and work independently and with a team. Ability to communicate and relate to others in order to provide information and explanation. Preferred Qualifications A working knowledge of the proper techniques and procedures for handling and storage of a wide variety of laboratory materials such as chemicals, biological organisms, and potentially hazardous materials. Possess a working knowledge of state and federal laws and regulation such as OSHA and DEM concerning safety, biological organisms, and hazardous materials.
