DICKINSON STATE UNIVERSITY (DSU) is a regional comprehensive institution within the North Dakota University System, whose primary role is to contribute to intellectual, social, economic, and cultural development, especially to Southwestern North Dakota. The School of Education offers programs in Graduate and Undergraduate programs in Teacher Education. In addition to degrees in Elementary Education, Technology Education and Master of Art in Teaching, the department offers course work and field experiences for other departments' Secondary Education Programs (e.g. biology, chemistry, composite social science, English, history, and music) and is the de facto head of the university's Teacher Education Program. The department coordinates with the West River Teacher Center to offer professional development graduate credit courses for in-service teachers. Part of the department's leadership for the university's Teacher Education Program involves maintaining program approval from North Dakota's teacher licensing agency, the Education Standards and Practice Board; and accredited status from the national accreditor for teacher preparation programs, the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation. The School of Education is the contemporary embodiment of the university's original mission and identity as Dickinson State Normal School, created in 1916 by constitutional amendment and opened in 1918 as an institution for the training of elementary and secondary school teachers. DSU is seeking to hire an Assistant Professor of Psychology. The faculty member will be required to teach 24 semester hours per academic year of courses in psychology, which may include introductory psychology, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, social psychology, lifespan and adolescent development, professional ethics, and/or other courses of interest to the candidate or required by the program. This position also requires willingness to teach online and/or hybrid courses, in addition to traditional face-to-face teaching modality. The faculty member will work collaboratively in a department that serves psychology majors and minors and serves as an integral part of the general education curriculum for all programs on campus. Additional responsibilities include quality academic advising service to students, participation in departmental and University committees, and service to the campus and larger community. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIRED COMPETENCIES: * Doctoral degree (ABD candidates will be considered) in psychology or closely related field. * All academic degrees from accredited institutions * Demonstrated excellence in teaching * Good organizational skills, flexibility, and a strong work ethic * Excellent interpersonal/oral/written communication skills * Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/COMPETENCIES: * Degrees in Clinical or Counseling Psychology * Experience in clinical counseling psychology (teaching and/or practice) * Experience with assessment at course, program, and university levels * Evidence of ongoing research and scholarly publication DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: * Provide instruction in the various Psychology courses offered by DSU. * Teaching effectiveness includes, but may not be limited to the following: * teach assigned class loads; * make appropriate preparations for the semester including syllabus preparation, preparation of lecture and/or studio materials, preparation of tests and assignments as needed/appropriate, revise course materials when needed, and provide measurable objectives for student performance; * act as a professional role model to students; * communicate effectively with students; * arrive at class punctually and use class time effectively; * stay current in field of expertise; * be available to and provide assistance to students; and * perform other teaching duties as assigned or noted by supervisor. * Course load each semester may involve travel to the university's sites in Bismarck or Williston, teaching by interactive video, and/or online. * Physical demands include the ability to stand or otherwise be present in a classroom during class time, the ability to move to students to provide assistance in the class, and the abilities to speak and listen. * The individual in this position is expected to participate in scholarly activities and self-improvement. * These activities may include, but are not limited to: * evaluation and selection of materials for classroom activities, * professional reading and/or research for self-improvement and effectiveness; * continuing education, including experiential learning; * professional exhibition of creative work and/or publishing in the outlets of professional organizations; * conference, workshop, convention and seminar attendance; * presentations at professional conferences, workshops, conventions and/or seminars; * consultant work; * creation of new courses; and * review of commercial and professional curriculum materials. * Physical demands are as needed to carry out the given task, but are not excessive and are largely controlled by the employee. * The individual in this position is expected to make on-campus contributions to the university. * On-campus service related activities may include but are not limited to: * advising of students; * writing recommendations and assisting with job placement; * recruiting (students and faculty/staff); * raising funds; * serving on campus committees and councils; * conducting and/or assisting at clinics, workshops, camps, etc.; * supporting DSU's continuing education-outreach efforts; * attending university functions; and * advising student organizations. * Physical demands are as needed to carry out the given task, but are not excessive and are largely controlled by the employee. * The individual in this position is expected to make off-campus contributions to the university. * Off-campus activities in this category may include but are not limited to: * making speeches/giving presentations to community groups; * organizing and/or working with community organizations; * belonging to or holding office in community organizations; * seeking or holding governmental office or working on behalf of governmental candidates and/or organizations; * serving on advisory boards; and * serving western North Dakota as a resource within the area of expertise. * Physical demands are as needed to carry out the given task, but are not excessive and are largely controlled by the employee.
