The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) Program is a program designed to hire transitioning service, National Guard, Reserve, and Veteran corpsmen, combat medics and medical technicians into positions at VA Medical Centers as an integral part of the medical team. Candidates generally qualify based on U.S. Armed Forces experience or equivalent education. May perform other related technical health care procedures under the supervision of the ED Physicians. Major duties include, but are not limited to: * Provides physician supervised treatment of patients seen in the Emergency Department (ED). * Performs basic procedures under the direction of the supervising physician and provide assistance to physicians performing more complicated procedures. * Assists in behavioral/psychiatric situations to include crisis intervention, management of aggressive or suicidal psychiatric patients, and one-to-one observations. * Recognizes life threatening situations and other hospital emergencies and be able to activate the appropriate codes and/or steps required to call for definitive help. * Understands normal and abnormal vital signs and be familiar with equipment such as pulse oximetry, EKG cardiac monitors, oxygen apparatuses and other monitoring equipment used in the ED. * Includes dressing changes, wound management, suture removal, repair of simple lacerations, urinary catheters insertion, splint, binder, and bandage applications. * Collects specimen, preparation and transfer to the lab for processing of blood, tissue, urine, stool and sputum is expected to be a routine part of the ICT's practice. * Monitors and obtains test results as soon as available and informs physicians promptly to facilitate patient care. * Responds to medical emergencies on the facility grounds, and sometimes encounters situations which may be life threatening as part of the Rapid Response Team (RRT). * Conducts or assists with the training of personnel in CPR, basic, and advanced emergency medical care techniques if appropriately trained and qualified.
