The City of San Marcos Parks and Recreation Department welcomes qualified applications for the position of part time Facilities Maintenance Specialist at the Senior Center. The objective of the position is to provide high quality maintenance and janitorial support to Senior Center staff. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about jumping into new and different projects while providing support to staff at the Senior Center. This will include tasks such as washing dishes, transporting hot food for the senior nutrition program, preparing for and setting up events, assisting with the maintenance of assets, deep cleaning of the facility on both a routine and as needed basis, minor equipment assembly and repair, delivering equipment and providing back up coverage for facility attendants and performing front desk tasks, when needed.  If you are passionate about providing excellent customer service to community members and colleagues, enjoy making a difference in the community and are ready to roll your sleeves up to jump into the action with our Parks and Recreation Department, we look forward to reviewing your application. Part time positions with the City of San Marcos are restricted to no more than an average of 20 hours per week and no more than 999 hours within the fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). Hours will be scheduled based on department need and budget approval. This position will be scheduled to work 15-20 hours per week, which may include nights and weekends depending on the special event schedule.        Monday - Friday 9 am - 1 pm, plus some special events Apply by: 4pm Friday, May 1st, 2026  Interviews: Tuesday, May 12th, 2026 The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices. Facility Assistance / Maintenance Senior Center * Assist with set up & clean-up for lunch service (daily) * Wash dishes (daily) * Transport hot food from caterer for lunch service (daily) * Maintenance of facility (daily) * Provide customer service to Senior Activity Center patrons * Maintenance of department vehicle (work with fleet shop to coordinate oil changes, fire extinguisher checks, washes) * Clean closets in facility (at least once a year) * Wipe down all tables and chairs * Deep clean kitchen * Upkeep/check/fix tables where a screw comes loose or a wheel falls off. * Clean/wipe down the refrigerator (monthly) * Organize tables and chairs * Clean cobwebs * As needed equipment assembly (furniture) * As needed minor equipment / furniture repair / painting * As needed equipment / furniture moving and/or disposal- Inventory Shift Coverage As needed facility attendant coverage As needed front desk coverage Other duties as assigned. The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties. Knowledge of: Basic general maintenance knowledge; methods, techniques, and skills in the use of tools and equipment used in day-to-day maintenance activities; and safety precautions necessary in working with chemicals and basic power tools. Modern office methods and practices; filing systems; receptionist and telephone techniques; letter writing, proofreading and editing; basic business mathematics; and various office equipment and machines including copier, calculator, and computer utilizing various software programs.      Ability to:  Perform moderately strenuous physical work at locations with agility and endurance; perform a wide variety of maintenance and repair duties ensuring the satisfactory condition of recreation equipment; use and conduct repairs on basic power tools; lift up to 90 pounds; follow oral and written instructions; read, understand, and follow Material Safety Data Sheets; receive training and apply such training as required; perform manual labor; use good judgment in the scope of assigned authority; establish and maintain cooperative and effective relations with City employees and the public; and demonstrate an awareness and appreciation of the cultural diversity of the community. Operate office equipment including data entry keyboards, copy and fax equipment, printers.  Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; cooperatively handle a wide variety of tasks; perform all duties with composure; use good judgment in the scope of assigned authority.   Education/Training Education equivalent to high school graduation.   Experience  A combination of the experience and/or training providing the required knowledge and abilities needed to successfully perform the above-described duties. Typical experience would include at least one (1) year of experience in responsible maintenance work.   License or Certificate  Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license, Class C, with satisfactory driving record.
