Job Description

The Ohio State University College of Medicine and Wexner Medical Center seek an exceptional Functional Medicine Physician to join our Center for Integrative Health, practice functional medicine, and lead the development of an innovative integrative primary care service line. The Center for Integrative Health's vision for this new service line is to strengthen collaborations with specialties, including, but not limited to, Oncology, Long COVID, Women's Health, Neurology, etc. This is a hybrid role combining clinical practice with strategic administrative responsibilities. The successful candidate will take a patient-centered, individualized, and science-based approach to address the root causes of chronic disease rather than managing isolated symptoms. The program trains medical students, residents, fellows, and practicing clinicians in integrative health principles. It actively collaborates with campus and community partners to promote preventive care and research-driven wellness initiatives. Flagship programs, such as Mindfulness in Motion, reflect the Center's commitment to developing scalable interventions that improve patient outcomes, reduce stress, and enhance overall resilience.With a mission rooted in holistic, patient-centered care, the Center for Integrative Health is advancing the future of integrative medicine in an academic environment—bringing together expert clinicians, researchers, educators, and innovators to transform how health and healing are delivered.Position Overview Clinical ResponsibilitiesThe clinical component (60%) focuses on direct patient care and comprehensive health management. Responsibilities of this component include, but are not limited to:Conduct through patient evaluations, including detailed health histories, physical examinations, and advanced diagnostic testing to assess overall health status and identify underlying causes of diseaseDevelop personalized, evidence-based treatment plans that integrate conventional medicine with complementary approaches such as nutrition, exercise, stress management, sleep optimization, and lifestyle modificationDiagnose and manage patients with chronic illnesses, including heart disease, metabolic disorders, autoimmune conditions, and other complex health issuesProvide patient education regarding their conditions and treatment options, empowering patients to make informed decisions about their healthAdapt treatment plans based on individual patient needs, goals, and response to interventions, demonstrating flexibility in clinical decision-makingMaintain comprehensive, up-to-date patient records to ensure continuity of care and optimal patient outcomes.Collaborate with other healthcare providers and clinical support staff to deliver integrated, coordinated careAdministrative ResponsibilitiesThe administrative component (40%) focuses on building and establishing the new integrative primary care service line. Responsibilities of this component include, but are not limited to:Practice Functional Medicine and lead the development of an integrative primary care service lineDevelop clinical protocols and evidence-based guidelines for the integrative primary care service line with the design of a financial model that can be sustainable over timeDesign and implement comprehensive patient assessment and treatment frameworks that combine functional medicine principles with conventional medical standardsManage administrative tasks, including scheduling, patient record management, and communication with patients and referring providersOversee quality assurance and patient satisfaction metrics for the new service lineParticipate in staff training and education to ensure consistent delivery of functional medicine principles across the teamCollaborate with center leadership to establish operational procedures, resource allocation, and strategic goals for service line growthContribute to research, quality improvement initiatives, and outcomes tracking to demonstrate the effectiveness of integrative primary careMentor clinical and administrative staff in functional medicine approaches and best practicesRequired QualificationsMD, DO, or equivalent degreeLicense/license-eligible in the state of OhioBoard certification in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or related fieldCertification in Functional Medicine (IFMCP)Minimum 3+ years of clinical experience in primary care or related fieldStrong foundation in conventional medicine with demonstrated understanding of diagnostic and treatment protocolsOutstanding communication and interpersonal skills, capable of engaging leaders, coworkers, direct reports, and patients with professionalism and clarity.Demonstrated ability to promote collaboration and achieve results within interdisciplinary teams.Qualify for a minimum of an academic appointment at the assistant or associate professor level- Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with previous training and experiencePreferred QualificationsExperience in developing new clinical service lines or programsBackground in integrative or holistic medicine approachesExperience utilizing electronic health record (EHR) systems to support clinical workflows and documentationDemonstrated commitment to continuous medical education and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of functional medicine research and best practicesDemonstrated ability to lead and mentor teams within a collaborative, cross-disciplinary environmentsExperience in an academic medical center preferredThe university is an equal opportunity employer, including veterans and disability.
