Summary: This position is responsible for accepting, processing, and performing waived and moderate laboratory testing and reporting for the testing area. This position requires teamwork to achieve common goals and meet deadlines to provide quality care to clients and patients. Required Job Qualifications: u2022 Experience: No previous experience required. u2022 Associates degree or higher in relevant science required, or education/work experience meeting the qualification of moderate complexity testing personnel as defined by CLIA 42 CFR 493 1489. u2022 Employees in this job classification are qualified to perform waived and moderate complexity testing. Employees' education and/or laboratory experience meet the requirements delineated in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment of 1996. RUMC reserves the right to limit an MLT's scope of testing. u2022 Certification (or eligible) from a nationally recognized certifying agency is required. Eligibility as determined by ASCP and/or AMT requirements. Some laboratory disciplines may require more stringent certification criteria. Responsibilities: Job Responsibilities: Order Entry/Customer Service u2022 Performs multiple computer entry, inquiry, and receiving functions. u2022 Performs transcription of laboratory orders and registration activities when needed. u2022 Demonstrates good communication and customer service skills on the phone and in person. u2022 Calls critical results, documents to whom and that a u201cread backu201d was performed and within the expected time frame. Specimen Processing u2022 Accessions and processes specimens according to the appropriate procedure prepare specimens accordingly for transport or delivery. u2022 Recognizes and resolves any specimen and equipment problems. u2022 Delivers specimens to RUSH laboratory locations, and/or loads specimens on instrumentation. Performs Laboratory Testing u2022 Utilizes required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as defined by the lab area. u2022 Labels and processes specimens properly. Performs all laboratory procedures efficiently and effectively with minimal supervision once trained; All testing must be done following Rush-approved Policies and Procedures. Quality Control and Preventative Maintenance u2022 Performs required quality control (QC) procedures and preventative maintenance, including corrective action and documentation, for all procedures and instrumentation. u2022 Recognizes QC problems or discrepancies and attempts to determine the cause of problem. Notifies appropriate supervisor or designee regarding QC problems or discrepancies according to the established procedure. Troubleshooting u2022 Performs basic troubleshooting of equipment and processes with minimal assistance, documents action and notifies appropriate personnel, for example, supervisors, of problems all the time. Able to recognize when additional help is needed and seek out that help. Organization of Work Area u2022 Keeps work area neat, clean, organized, and well-stocked at all times. Disinfects the area at the beginning and end of each shift. Specimen Acceptability u2022 Accepts no inappropriate specimens. Notifies the appropriate person of specimens that must be drawn or collected again and documents the notification. Turnaound Time Expectations u2022 Meets turnaround time expectations by prioritizing and organizing the workload for the shift. Monitors the pending list periodically to ensure turnaround time of all samples. Time Management u2022 Utilizes time effectively and seeks out additional job duties when shift tasks are complete. u2022 Completes work without incurring overtime. Assists fellow workers to finish shift tasks. u2022 Adheres to the defined allotted time for breaks and lunch. Continuing Education u2022 Required to obtain and document 12 hours of laboratory continuing education per year. Special Projects u2022 Accepts and/or volunteers for method evaluations and new procedure development or other special projects and completes them within an agreed upon time frame. u2022 Participates in procedure implementation and training of new staff and students. u2022 Encouraged to identify and participate in process improvement projects. Report Reviewing and Results Reportings u2022 Reviews lab results as required and takes appropriate action before verification and release. u2022 Recognizes and calls critical results within defined time frames. u2022 Reviews paper generated results and transcribes accurately into the Lab Information System.
