Employer Name: CUNY City University of New York - System Senior Network Services Engineer (IT Infrastructure Engineer 3) - Provisional GENERAL DUTIES This position encompasses professional and responsible highly technical consultative and/or administrative work unique to the design and engineering of complex datacenters, networks and cloud deployments. Under administrative direction of a university IT manager, with broad latitude for independent action or decision, is responsible for the development of comprehensive infrastructure solutions. Engineer and operate mission critical infrastructure and be responsible for the access and protection of sensitive data, systems, and networks. May lead a team or participate in a team in planning, designing, implementing, and maintaining datacenter and cloud operations that includes the management of IT facilities, network, security, telecommunications, servers, storage, and virtualization components. There are three Levels of this title. Assignment Levels 2 and 3 may oversee multiple projects and supervise employees. CONTRACT TITLE IT Infrastructure Engineer FLSA Non-exempt CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION The Office of Computing and Information Services (CIS) at the City University of New York (CUNY) supports the IT and telecommunications needs of CUNY's 26 colleges. CIS supports enterprise IT and applications, develops new technologies that advance the University's core mission, builds, upgrades and maintains the University's network, operates the University's Data Center and Service Desk, and manages the processes that safeguard the University?s IT assets and operates the SOC. Additionally, CIS develops disaster recovery plans for business continuity, maintains the security of the University?s IT assets, and maintains the CUNYfirst Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution that integrates student administration, financial management, and human resources operations across CUNY?s 26 colleges. Lastly, CIS provides strategic and operational IT leadership with respect to the maintenance, enhancement, and expansion of the CUNY network spanning across all CUNY campuses. CUNY seeks an experienced Senior Network Services Engineer to join its Network Services team, contributing to the success of CUNY?s shared services IT initiative. Reporting to the Director of Network Services, the incumbent will provide the design, engineering, implementation, and operations of enterprise-scale network infrastructure across CUNY?s sites and will serve as the lead technical networking resource for all CUNY campuses. They will provide leadership across core routing and switching, optical transport, datacenter fabrics, cloud connectivity, security, and automation. This opportunity provides a chance to influence the future of CUNY's IT capabilities, with responsibilities that include overseeing 3,000+ devices, 300,000+ computers, and 30,000+ mobile devices. The incumbent will be responsible for the development of comprehensive infrastructure solutions and high-impact projects, such as Network Automation and Centralized Management, CUNY Private Cloud (Server Workload Consolidation), and Telephony Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: Design, build, and operate the enterprise core network and metropolitan optical backbone, including DWDM/optical platforms and dark-fiber interconnects. Engineer, deploy, and support datacenter network fabrics (spine/leaf, VXLAN/EVPN) and application delivery services (e.g., F5/Netscaler); manage IP addressing and DNS/DHCP via IPAM (Infoblox). Architect secure, segmented multi-tenant topologies (e.g., VRFs) and integrate hybrid/public cloud networking (e.g., Azure/AWS) consistent with zero-trust principles. Drive network automation and standardization (configuration templates, network-as-code, centralized management) to improve reliability and speed of delivery. Provide technical leadership for service consolidation initiatives (e.g., CUNY Private Cloud, centralized management, and telephony services) in coordination with campus IT teams. Serve as senior escalation point for complex enterprise networking issues; mentor and guide junior engineers. Translate business/technical requirements into architecture and implementation plans; produce HLD/LLD and operational runbooks. Implement and operate core services across routing/switching, wireless LAN, WAN/MAN, firewalls, load balancers, IPAM, and optical systems. Establish and maintain configuration standards and reusable templates; enforce change management and peer review. Monitor and optimize availability, utilization, and latency; lead deep-dive troubleshooting using platforms such as SolarWinds, Catalyst Center and Nexus Dashboard Provide packet capture support and analysis of traffic flows Lead infrastructure crisis management and major incident response; coordinate rapid service restoration and post-incident problem management. Own disaster recovery design and configurations for network services; plan and execute periodic DR tests and maintain DR documentation. Develop and review technical specifications/SOWs for procurements; participate in evaluations of vendor proposals and solutions. Collaborate with Security, Systems, and Applications teams to ensure resilient, secure designs and effective change management. Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, diagrams, inventories, and knowledge articles. Prioritize project and operational work; coordinate resources and schedules to meet deadlines and service levels. NOTES: Until further notice, this position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule. An appointment to this Competitive title/position in the Classified Civil Service Title Series will be made with a Provisional status. Employees in provisional status must pass a competitive civil service examination and be appointed from a civil service list to remain in the title/position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 1. A baccalaureate degree in computer science, engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university and five (5) years of satisfactory full-time experience in thedesign and engineering of complex datacenters, networks and/or cloud deployments; or 2.
