Job Description: The Data Network Engineer will monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot enterprise data and voice networks, with a particular focus on fiber optic networking and wired LAN infrastructure. This role supports both daily operations and project-based deployments, including pre-planning, design, installation, testing, and migration activities. The engineer will collaborate with vendors, internal teams, and project stakeholders to ensure high-performing, secure, and stable network operations across plant facilities. Responsibilities: Monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot data and voice networks; respond to alarms and network issues using defined procedures and escalate as appropriate. Support enterprise network operations, including incident management, root cause analysis, reporting, and corrective action management. Participate in project planning, design, and deployment of network solutions using standard technologies. Provide hands-on deployment and maintenance of network infrastructure, including fiber optic cabling and structured LAN solutions. Advise and guide less-experienced technicians on troubleshooting, maintenance, and best practices. Monitor network performance, security, and stability, proactively identifying trends and addressing potential issues. Participate in on-call rotation to provide 24/7 network support as needed. Manage vendor relationships related to incident management, project coordination, SLA adherence, and solution implementation. Support network integration, migration, and testing activities in a heavy-industry environment. Operate and maintain testing equipment such as OTDRs and related fiber optic diagnostic tools. Contribute to project documentation, including network design, deployment plans, and operational procedures. Required Skills And Qualifications: Associate’s degree in a technical field or equivalent experience. Demonstrated experience supporting wired LAN technologies in an enterprise environment (Cisco), with emphasis on fiber optic and structured cabling solutions. Hands-on experience in network installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance, preferably in a steel mill or heavy-industry environment. Experience participating in or leading enterprise-level projects focused on Data Networking, Network Security, or Cyber Security compliance. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities and respond effectively under pressure. Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to interact professionally with internal teams, vendors, and remote stakeholders. Willingness to work flexible hours, including on-call and plant-based hands-on assignments. Technical Skills: LAN switching and routing in Cisco enterprise network environments. Structured cabling and fiber optic network installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Operation of OTDR and related network testing tools. Cisco CCNA certification or higher preferred. WLAN fundamentals; experience with Cisco WLAN solutions and tools like Ekahau. Project management experience or certification is a plus. Additional desired skills: advanced IP routing (OSPF/BGP), Cisco Nexus data center support, network security controls, scripting/programming in a network environment (e.g., Ansible), NetBrain support.
