Job Description Summary: The Insurance Senior Accountant applies principles of both STAT and GAAP accounting to prepare financial reports and to analyze financial information. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: u2022 Compiles and analyzes financial information to prepare entries to accounts, such as general ledger accounts, documenting business transactions. u2022 Possesses a strong understanding of earned premium, assumed premium, and ceded premium and how to record on the financial statements. u2022 Prepares NAIC quarterly and annual filings. u2022 Prepares reinsurance settlement statements. u2022 Calculates and files quarterly Premium Tax due to various states within which we are licensed. u2022 Distributes expenditures, encumbrances, receipts, and receivables according to schedules. u2022 Performs statistical analyses to determine trends, estimates, and significant changes, and writes narrative reports explaining findings. u2022 Performs variance and ratio analysis and presents results to upper management. u2022 Performs detailed reconciliations for both cash accounts and intercompany loan accounts to ensure that both sides of each area balance on the accounting system. Determines cash needs for Single Business Units (SBU's). Performs bank reconciliations and set up ACH for expenditures. u2022 Analyzes financial information detailing assets, liabilities, and capital, and prepares balance sheet, profit and loss statement, and other reports to summarize and interpret current and projected company financial position for other managers. u2022 Audits contracts, orders, and vouchers, and prepares reports to substantiate individual transactions prior to settlement. u2022 Determines proper handling of financial transactions and approves transactions within designated limits. u2022 Monitors compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP), and company procedures. u2022 Reviews, investigates, and corrects errors and inconsistencies in financial entries, documents, and reports. u2022 Installs, modifies, documents, and coordinates implementation of accounting systems and accounting control procedures. u2022 Devise and implement system for general accounting. Consistently looks for ways to improve processes, automating where possible. u2022 Designs and maintains pro forms for current and proposed contracts to determine pricing and profitability. u2022 Makes recommendations regarding the accounting of reserves, assets, and expenditures u2022 Conducts studies and submits recommendations for improving the organization's accounting operation. u2022 Collects appropriate data and prepares federal, state, and local reports and tax returns.
