This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the Cityu2019s collective Bargaining Agreement with Painters Council 14 (Bargaining Unit # 39). ESSENTIAL DUTIES u00b7 Reads blueprints, specifications and work orders to assess work required and to determine most appropriate preparation and application methods to use u00b7 Applies primer, paint, stain, varnish and other finishes to multi-surfaces such as, concrete, metal, glass, wood, vinyl, sheetrock and plaster with sprayers, rollers and brushes u00b7 Cleans and prepares surfaces to ensure paint and other finishes will adhere properly u00b7 Fills and smoothu2019s holes, cracks, and joints with spackle, caulk and compounds u00b7 Removes old paint from wood, brick, metal and other surfaces by stripping, sanding, wire brushing, air blasting and power washing u00b7 Erects scaffolding and ladders to perform painting work above ground level u00b7 Mixes latex and oil-based paints, tints primers and prepares epoxies u00b7 Paints viaducts, crosswalks, stripes parking lots and applies street pavement markings such as, stop bars, skip dashes, bike lanes and symbols, and other markings u00b7 Loads and unloads equipment and supplies from work vehicle u00b7 Spreads drop clothes to protect equipment and surrounding areas u00b7 Cleans paint applicators, equipment and work sites after paint jobs are completed u00b7 Prepares work activity reports _u00b7_ Moves furnishings, equipment and other obstacles to complete paint jobs, as needed NOTE: The list of essential duties is not intended to be inclusive; there may be other duties that are essential to particular positions within the class _._ Location: Various Days Off: Saturday & Sunday Shifts: 6:30 am u2013 2:30 pm NOTE: Location of assignment and shift hours to be determined by seniority/operational needs THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education, Training, and Experience u00b7 Successful completion of a U.S. Department of Labor registered painting apprenticeship training program and journeyman status; OR Should the above criteria not be fulfilled, the following options are available: o Successful completion of a company or industry sponsored apprenticeship training program as a painter, PLUS two (2) years of journey-level work experience as a painter o Five (5) years of journey-level work experience as a painter PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS u00b7 Heavy lifting (up to 75 pounds) is required (e.g., stackable scaffolding) u00b7 Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time u00b7 Ability to bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with oneu2019s body, arms, and/or legs u00b7 Ability to climb staircases, ladders, and/or step stools u00b7 Ability to work above ground on staging equipment for extended periods of time u00b7 Ability to access difficult to enter spaces (e.g., basements, cramped quarters) u00b7 Ability to operate applicable hand tools, power tools, and equipment LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, OR OTHER QUALIFICATIONS u00b7 Some positions may require a valid State of Illinois driveru2019s license u00b7 Some positions may require the permanent use of an automobile that is properly insured, including a clause specifically insuring the City of Chicago from accident liability u00b7 Some positions may require completion of a U.S. Department of Labor Outreach Training Program (OSHA card) u00b7 Some positions may require an EPA Lead Abatement Certification u00b7 Some positions may require previous work experience painting concrete viaducts and using paint to create pavement markings including curbs, gutters, stop bars, crosswalks, skip dashes, bike lanes and symbols SELECTION REQUIREMENTS Please note that this position does not require a test or an interview as part of the selection process. Applicants who successfully apply for the position and meet the minimum qualifications will be hired in a lottery/random order . Bidders will be hired in seniority order according to the collective bargaining agreement. Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following: u00b7 Commercial/ Industrial painting experience u00b7 Ability to coordinate painting jobs with the foreman u00b7 Ability to complete painting jobs in a professional timely manner APPLICATION EVALUATION: Initial evaluation will be based on information provided on the application and the documents submitted.
