Summary The primary role is to manage and plan how services are delivered and contribute to the process of strategic planning, influencing and responding to organizational priorities. Working with the Executive Team, appropriate Service level chiefs, Associate Chiefs of Staff and program coordinators. This position directly reports to the Chief of Staff and will provide direct supervision for approximately 63 FTEEs, with a mix of clinical and administrative employees. The incumbent is expected to have strong interpersonal skills and demonstrate a commitment to an interdisciplinary approach to patient care delivery. The incumbent is expected to demonstrate the ability to coordinate a broad continuum of programs and demonstrate abilities to work well within a senior management team. The incumbent expected to perform sufficient direct patient care to maintain clinical competency. Duties include but are not limited to: Function in lead management role within the Medicine Services. Each member of staff has a reporting relationship, through their line supervisor, to the Service Chief. Develop and implement measures to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in the designated areas of responsibility. Develop and execute a Medicine Service Business Plan for the Chief of Staff of the medical center. Develop annual budgetary reports based on quality activity and financial information and projections. Be accountable for resources used, directly and indirectly, by the Chief of Medicine. Promote and develop measures to enable the Director to monitor Medicine Service staff individual performance and to assess clinical outcomes; and addressing performance issues at Director, Team and individual level. Quality Improvement: Directs the continuous measurement and improvement of the quality of care provided by the Medicine Service. Maintain inventory of CIH approaches offered at VHA facility, including gap analysis as it relates to CIH approaches that must be offered by VA/community per Directive 1137. Create strategic partnerships with VHA facility program directors and service line chiefs. Collaborate with other Medicine Service Chiefs, VISN leadership, and VA Central Office (OPCC & CT) staff on program development issues. Collaborate with VA leadership. Provide strategic clinical input and ensure effective advice to the Service line ACOS, service line chief, and executive team. Education: Plan and direct the educational and clinical experience of any potential trainees, including psychology interns and postdocs; medical students, residents, and fellows; or other disciplines assigned to the Medicine Service. Supports clinical training and continuing professional development. Research: Collaborate effectively in developing, conducting and evaluating research activities and programs with VA Central Office and VAPORHCS/OHSU partners. Human Resources Management: Participate in the selection of Medicine Service team members, Oversee the recruitment of permanent, temporary and locum staff. Provide direct line supervision to program coordinator/specialist for Medicine Service. Demonstrate exemplary interpersonal effectiveness: build and sustain relationships, resolve conflict, handle negotiation effectively, and develop collaborative working relationships.
