Next filing cut-offs are at 5:00 pm on: 11/7/2025, 11/21/2025, 12/19/2025 (Final) Under direction, the Supervising Coroner Technician plans, organizes, supervises and coordinates the activities of the lower level staff in the operations of morgue services, supervises preparation of bodies for autopsies and assists forensic pathologists during autopsies. Examples of Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of + Principles of supervision + Purpose and objectives of a coroneru2019s office + Laws, rules, and regulations pertinent to morgue operations + Customer service principles and techniques + Techniques, procedures, and equipment involved in handling and preparing bodies for autopsy examination + Methods and procedures for care of surgical instruments and autopsy equipment + Methods of preparing and preserving specimens + Radiographic techniques, methods, and operations; film processing and development; maintenance of radiographic equipment + Principles of photography + Principles of clinical investigations + Human anatomy and physiology as applied to conducting autopsies + Medical terminology + Universal safety precautions and aseptic techniques Ability to + Analyze operational and technical problems, evaluate alternatives, and recommend workable solutions + Maintain comprehensive records + Prepare reports and correspondence + Interpret laws, rules, and regulations pertinent to a morgue + Perform complex and varied tasks related to morgue services + Develop and conduct in-service training applicable to morgue support services + Train subordinates in the methods and procedures of morgue services + Use surgical instruments to complete technical procedures requiring exacting skills + Photograph bodies and process and develop film + Communicate with people of various social, cultural, economic, and educational background + Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing + Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others + Present a demeanor of dignity and sensitivity when interacting with distraught persons and grieving family members + Work with law enforcement staff on high profile cases + Maintain confidentiality + Work with the public under highly emotional and stressful situations + Interact with people of various cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds Employment Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Either: One year of full-time paid experience employed by the County of Sacramento in the class of Senior Coroner Technician. Or: Three years of full-time paid experience in morgue services assisting pathologists with autopsies using a variety of techniques to prepare specimens and/or evidence, one year of which must have been in a supervisory or lead worker capacity. Or: Three years of full-time paid experience, which includes two years of full-time paid experience assisting pathologists with autopsies using a variety of techniques to prepare specimens and/or evidence, AND one year of full-time paid experience as a supervisor or lead worker in: a science research or surgical laboratory; a mortuary assisting in the preparation of bodies for burial; a medical setting; or similar experience. Note: If the word u201cexperienceu201d is referenced in the minimum qualifications, it means full-time paid experience unless the minimum qualification states that volunteer experience is acceptable. Part-time paid experience may be accumulated and pro-rated to meet the total experience requirements. General Qualifications Criminal History and Background Checks: The County may access criminal history information on candidates who have accepted a conditional offer of appointment for the above class consistent with the provisions of Board of Supervisors Resolution No. 82-602, Personnel Policies and Procedure and applicable federal and state law. The County shall not consider for employment any candidate who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor that relates to or impacts the candidate's ability to perform the job duties of this class unless it is determined that mitigating circumstances exist. For purposes of accessing criminal history information, the candidate will be fingerprinted. A subsequent arrest notification may be obtained. The County may also conduct a background check on the candidate prior to appointment to a position within this class. The background check may include personal and professional reference checks, credit history checks, Social Security Number verification, professional license/registration verification, military service information and driving history. Information obtained in the course of this background check will be considered by the appointing authority in the selection process. In obtaining such information, the County will comply with applicable consent and disclosure practices in the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the California Investigative Consumer Reporting Agencies Act. Driveru2019s License: A valid California Driver License, Class C or higher, is required at the time of appointment. Failure to obtain or maintain the appropriate valid California Driver License constitutes cause for personnel action in accordance with Civil Service Rules or applicable bargaining agreement. Physical Abilities: Positions in this class require the incumbent to be able to: + Lift and move bodies weighing up to 150 pounds with assistance. + Assist with carrying dead bodies up and down stairs and steep levees, and in confined areas. + Stand for long periods of time. + Engage in continuous active work requiring moderate physical exertion and manual dexterity in handling of bodies or equipment. + Constantly hold, reach, grasp, write, and perform repetitive motion. + Use an air-purifying respirator required by OSHA. Working Conditions: Positions in this class require the incumbent to be able to: + Collect specimens of human fluids and wastes including blood, urine, and organ tissues from deceased bodies which may include specimens containing communicable disease. + Work in the presence of biological/chemical agents and fumes. + Work irregular shifts (swing and graveyard), weekends, and holidays. Other Requirement: + Medical evaluation to determine ability to use a respirator. Probationary Period The probationary period for this classification is six (6) months.
