Job Description The Agency Youu2019ll Join: The NYC Mayoru2019s Office of Equity & Racial Justice (MOERJ) was established in October 2023 as the City of New Yorku2019s centralized agency to advance equity. Our mandate is rooted in a simple but powerful belief that every New Yorker deserves the chance to live, work, and thrive with dignity. To realize that vision, MOERJ brings together several key initiatives and offices, including the NYC Commission on Gender Equity (CGE), NYC Her Future (NHF), the NYC Young Menu2019s Initiative (YMI), and the NYC Unity Project (UP), as well as cross-agency bodies like the NYC Pay Equity Cabinet (PEC) and the NYC Taskforce on Racial Inclusion & Equity (TRIE). Together, we create a unified framework for addressing the many ways inequity shows up in daily life. The Team Youu2019ll Work With: Housed within MOERJ, NYC Her Future will drive positive change and help create a brighter future for all young people, with a special focus on young women, girls, and gender-expansive youth in communities of color across New York City. Launched as part of u201cWomen Forward NYC,u201d the cityu2019s $43 million action plan aimed at making New York a national leader on gender equity -- this new office connects young women, girls, and gender expansive youth of color to development opportunities and programs that center empowerment, cultural identity, well-being, and academic and career success. As a companion to the NYC Young Menu2019s Initiative (YMI), NYC Her Future will build on YMIu2019s success and work alongside it to ensure that all NYC youth are advancing and that their needs are met equitably. The Problems Youu2019ll Solve: Through the creation of NHF, the City has declared its commitment to prioritize young women. This newly created office will develop new programs and policies that are designed to address disparities impacting young women of color and their peers across numerous outcomes related to education, health, employment, and the criminal justice system. These programs and policies break down barriers to success and help young women achieve their professional, educational, and personal goals. Reporting to the Chief of Staff, the External Affairs Manager will ensure that the office is effectively communicating with all its stakeholders through social media efforts, paid media campaigns, and building public awareness, in addition to supporting the Senior Director of Strategy and Operations with partnership management. The External Affairs Manager will also provide support to the NYC Her Future Executive team. This individual should be eager to join a creative, mission-focused team in a startup environment. This is a dynamic role that will include participation in evening and weekend events. The External Affairs manager is also expected to be reachable outside of regular office hours for time sensitive matters such a press inquiries. Key Responsibilities: Duties include, but are not limited to the following: - Engage with various NYC communities to ensure NYC Her Future maintains a community focused approach to new program development and delivery. - Orchestrate, support, and execute the development and implementation of a strategic communications plan, including traditional media and digital strategy, to support NYC Her Futureu2019s programs, projects, events, and initiatives. - Lead and execute branding for NYC Her Future and develop innovative campaigns for the officeu2019s diverse programming. - Create and execute social media strategies to ensure a robust online presence that is relevant and up to date with current online discourse. - Create all social media content including, but not limited to, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, as well as content for blogs and medium posts. - Develop and distribute NYC Her Futureu2019s publications, including the bi-monthly newsletter. - Manage and support relationships with media, government, and international partners to advance the officeu2019s communications equities. - Draft and disseminate media advisories, press releases, press briefing material, and other external communications, as necessary. - Prepare regular status reports for senior management on the effectiveness of the partnership and communication strategies. - Create well-written and thoughtful, talking points, speeches, and other documents for publications as well as public appearances. - Develop comprehensive program documentation, including plans, schedules, and project reports for public distribution. - Support major NYC Her Future events in partnership with community and city government partners; Represent NYC Her Future at events, as requested. - Manage the general NYC Her Future email account to ensure community members requests of NYC Her Future are addressed. - Lead and contribute to special projects, as necessary. - Advise NYC Her Future team on best practices and new methods to better address vulnerable populations within NYC. About You: - Masteru2019s degree (MPA or related relevant degree preferred) plus three to five (3-5) years of relevant work experience or Bacheloru2019s degree at least five (5) years of work experience in City government or Non-profit sectors. - Experience with external affairs and communication required. - Ability to take initiative, problem solve, prioritize duties, balance competing priorities, and work independently within a fast-paced team environment, paying close attention to detail, meeting deadlines, and working well under pressure. - Approach work with an Equity lens, persistence, and a positive attitude. - Highly organized and detail-oriented. - Ability to think creatively, embrace new approaches, and pioneer innovative solutions to intricate problems, while working collaboratively with a diverse constituency. This includes working with all levels of staff, inside and outside of the city and other governmental and non-governmental agencies and/or organizations. - Effective and creative leadership ability with the capacity to work both independently and cooperatively to effect key strategies. - Excellent oral and written communication skills. - Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work well and communicate with a variety of audiences (e.g. employers, providers, and agency officials). - Experience in city and/or federal government is a plus. - Familiarity with education, youth development, mentorship, tutoring, or criminal justice policies and programs, a plus. Salary: The City of New York Mayoru2019s Office of Equity & Racial Justiceu2019s compensation package includes a market competitive salary and exceptional benefits.
