This position is located on Wake Island. Itu2019s a rotational position in which the selected employee will work a schedule of 3 months on the island and on month off unpaid, Wake Island is 2,100 miles away from HNL. While working on-site housing is provided in the form of a dormitory facility. All meals are furnished through the cafeteria. You are responsible for the flight from your home base to HNL. Transportation to wake island is provided by government sponsored aircraft. Job Summary The Motor Vehicle Mechanic maintains and repairs an array of motorized and non-motorized vehicles and equipment. This position is located at Wake Island, a remote island 2,200 miles west of Hawaii. The Motor Vehicle Mechanic performs various functions and incidental services associated with maintenance and repair of structural, body, frame, interior, and associated components consisting of metal, fiberglass, fabric, and other materials on an array of motorized and non-motorized vehicles and equipment. Essential Duties & Job Functions: u2022 Prepares collision/damage repair estimates, determines replacement parts, repairs, rebuilds, and paints major body/frame assemblies; removes and installs parts for sub-assemblies; performs upholstery repair. u2022 Inspects damages to determine extent and most economical means of repair to return vehicle or equipment to acceptable condition or meet manufacturer's specifications. u2022 Straightens, files, smooths, stretches, and welds sheet metal body sections (with folds, wrinkles, and large tears), mainframes, frame cross members, body structural members such as doorposts, doorframes, skeletal framework, and main support members. u2022 Manufacturers and/or installs new or replacement items such as a variety of braces, brackets, windows and windshield glass, and truck beds. Straightens and repairs frames and frames cross-members, using hydraulic body jacks and jigs to align for welding and reinforcing to maintain frame integrity. u2022 Fabricates sheet metal parts and sections using powered metal brake; welds light and medium gauge black iron, steel, cast, aluminum, stainless steel, and/or alloys using oxygen/acetylene, arc, TIG, and MIG welding. u2022 Repairs fiberglass vehicle body components using glass mat, resins, and hardeners to finish to specifications. u2022 Undercoats vehicles and applies corrosion preventive materials to body, frames, and panels as required. u2022 Uses a variety of tools and equipment commonly used in the trade such as hand shears, hack saws, metal brakes, chisels, solder guns, files, hammers, bumping dollies, slide hammers, hydraulic body jacks u2022 Performs Motor Vehicle Mechanic duties, as required. u2022 Serves as Fuel/Re-Supply Barge augmentee. u2022 Performs duties for the Emergency Response Team as required. u2022 Performs related work as assigned. Accountable For: Automotive repair practices and techniques The use of hand and power tools commonly used in the auto body trade. Good reasoning skills Troubleshooting and repairing engine assemblies, clutch assemblies, brakes, hydraulic systems, drive trains, transmissions, and electrical systems Quickly and accurately diagnose issues. Performing basic mathematic equations. Understanding and following directions. Ability to work cooperatively and safely with others on common projects. Work Conditions : The employee is regularly required to talk and hear to understand instructions, provide information, and respond to safety warnings. Work conditions require the employee to stand; climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; taste or smell; and work on scaffolding and ladders. The employee may frequently lift and/or move objects weighing up to 35 pounds without assistance and lift and/or move heavier objects with assistance. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of a formal motor vehicle mechanic apprenticeship. A combination of equivalent training and experience may be substituted for formal apprenticeship. Five (5) years' experience with heavy construction and snow removal equipment. Valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Obtain and maintain a National Agency Check.US Citizenship required. Ability to successfully pass a pre-employment background check, fingerprints, physical and drug test. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience working on a military installation.
