Reporting directly to the Director of Education and Visitor Services, the successful candidate will lead the reopening and ongoing management of the Museumu2019s Gift Store, playing a vital role in enhancing the visitor experience and supporting the Museumu2019s mission.The Director of Retail Operations will direct, coordinate, and oversee all aspects of store operations, including merchandise strategy, purchasing, inventory control, financial performance, and customer engagement. The position requires a leader who can balance operational excellence with the Museumu2019s cultural and educational mission. Other duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:u2022 Lead the full reopening and daily operations of the Museum Gift Store, setting high standards for customer service, merchandising, and efficiency.u2022 Develop and execute merchandise strategies that showcase New York Stateu2019s history, culture, and artistry, while maximizing sales and profitability.u2022 Drive financial performance by preparing and managing budgets, monitoring revenue and expenses, analyzing sales trends, and implementing strategies to achieve or exceed revenue goals.u2022 Oversee procurement and vendor relations by sourcing unique and mission-aligned merchandise, negotiating contracts, ensuring timely inventory replenishment, and resolving vendor issues.u2022 Identify NY-based consignment vendors, execute consignment contracts, and manage monthly payment of consignors.u2022 Manage store inventory and pricing, including vendor, product and consignment records.u2022 Coordinate with Museum security staff to maintain a safe shopping environment by implementing theft-prevention measures and managing incident responses.u2022 Address and resolve customer complaints, staff concerns, and emergencies, documenting outcomes and ensuring proper follow-up.u2022 Establish, implement, and enforce operational procedures for cash handling, inventory control, and loss prevention to safeguard State assets.u2022 Prepare and deliver reports on sales performance, financial outcomes, and program activities to Museum leadership.u2022 Collaborate with Museum staff to design store offerings that complement exhibitions, educational programming, and special events, driving integrated visitor engagement.u2022 Ensure full compliance with New York State fiscal, procurement, and human resources policies, maintaining accurate records and transparent processes.u2022 Represent the store in vendor negotiations, stakeholder meetings, and community partnerships to strengthen visibility and impact.u2022 Operate and manage point of sale (POS) and computer inventory systems effectively.u2022 Provide cashier and frontline service coverage as needed to ensure seamless operations. Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: NY HELPS This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.NON-COMPETITIVE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bacheloru2019s degree in education, ethnic studies, gender studies, museum studies, sociology, history, biology, anthropology, archeology, art, or geology, and one year of professional-level experience in the conceptual development of exhibits or exhibit-related programs for a major institution or agency with an annual visitation of at least 30,000.
