Job Description The Bureau of Customer Services (BCS) oversees the production and collection of water and sewer bills along with all the work required to maintain our citywide network of meters and meter reading devices. BCS serves approximately 836,000 customers and generates $4 billion of revenue annually. The Bureau of Customer Services seeks qualified candidates for the position of Water Use Inspector Level I work relating to the repair, replacement and installation of water meters and AMR related equipment. Under supervision and direction from a Chief Inspector or managerial supervision, the selected candidate will perform work in the field and/or office; read, inspect, test, make repair and replace water meters and Automated Meter Reading (AMR) equipment; Installs, repairs and replaces meter reading MTU equipment and/or remote wire. Will serve notices to repair recently installed and unapproved defective water meters. Conduct inspections to ensure conformance to codes, standards, plans or specifications relating to the metering, sale and use of City water, reports leaks and waste of water and inspects water use within a building. Inspects and approves or denies work completed by licensed plumbers to ensure conformance with water supply regulations in the execution of permits granted by the Department. Job Tasks/Duties: Inspects, test, repairs, replaces and installs water meters and associated conditions. Reads water meters and remote reading devices. Enters reading and appropriate condition codes into a portable computer and/or appropriate forms. Tests meter read indoors to ensure that water consumption is registered on the meters. Inspects plumbing to detect cross-connections and possible hazards and sources of contamination to the water supply system. Inspects and reports on work done by license plumbers and/or contractors to ensure conformance with departmental rules and regulations. Serves Inspectors Warning Notices of Violations related to detected violations of the rules, regulations and policies of the City. Testifies at the Environmental Control Board. Computes the water consumed since the last reading and compares it with similar period to detect possible waste. Gathers and reports information related to water and sewer use including plumbing and water meter configurations, descriptions of property and property use, and assessments of leaks and water waste. Maintain a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
