Campus Safety Responders at the University of Washington respond to public calls for service within a very diverse community, providing various services to our community, providing support to our law enforcement officers, interface with other campus stakeholders and constituencies on all safety matters, the campus and nearby areas, acting as an ambassador for safety, and advocating for University regulations. Campus Safety Responders conduct criminal and traffic investigations, prepare necessary documentation and testify in court. Responders also provide for the safety and security of persons and property at University events and attend community meetings. Duties and Responsibilities include: Position Purpose The Campus Safety Responder will perform general duty security work to protect life and property; promote and preserve safety and order, encourage voluntary compliance with state laws and University regulations and enforce as necessary; respond to crimes and accidents occurring on campus, maintain order, prevent and investigate crime, and be safety ambassador for the University of Washington. Campus Safety Responders have responsibility for enforcing campus regulations and local, state, and federal laws. Incumbents may be required to successfully complete a law enforcement course approved by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission and other job specific courses of instruction. Position Duties u2022 The Campus Safety Responder communicates and interacts effectively with a diverse group of students, faculty and staff and student groups to promote an inclusive campus community culture and participates in outreach and communication efforts. u2022 Patrol and inspect university buildings and grounds for trespassers, prowlers, fire, property damage, or other irregularities at all times (when not performing other work-related duties) by foot, bicycle, or vehicle ensuring that exterior and perimeter security doors are closed and locked, respond to alarms. u2022 Direct and regulate traffic, investigate accidents or crimes; administer first aid; issue citations for violations; gather evidence; locate witnesses; appear in court as required; u2022 Operate department communication equipment; answer telephone inquiries; receive reports of criminal activity; monitor camera and alarm systems; prepare, type, and distribute reports; u2022 Maintain observation or surveillance of an area suspect for criminal activity; u2022 Admit staff, faculty, and students to classrooms, offices, etc. u2022 Conduct safety escorts on and around campus; u2022 Assist university, city or county law enforcement and state patrol in cases of emergency; u2022 Provide excellent customer service in a friendly, courteous and professional manner with strong focus on customer satisfaction. u2022 Exhibit professionalism and good judgment in daily interactions with students, faculty, staff and visitors, and be a positive representative and ambassador of the campus administration. u2022 Initiate and complete reports using a computerized reporting system when assigned; maintain logs of activities, communicate with departmental supervisors via email. u2022 Promote safety and act as a safety ambassador for the university. u2022 Perform other related duties as assigned. Requirements include: High School graduation or equivalent; possession of a valid driveru2019s license; no previous felony convictions; AND two years of full-time college in police science or allied field; OR two years of police or campus security experience. Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration. Desired: u2022 Experience as a police officer or security officer, preferably in a college setting. u2022 Training/experience with fire, burglar and door key card access systems, computerized security systems, emergency phone systems, radio communication systems, and CCTV systems. u2022 Customer relations and/or public speaking experience. u2022 Familiarity and understanding of modern security technology applications and operations. Conditions of Employment: u2022 Must maintain a valid WA state driveru2019s license at all times. u2022 Campus Safety Responders are on duty 24 hours a day, most days of the year. Must be flexible for scheduling. u2022 Work shift may include nights, weekends, and holidays. u2022 Must be able to quickly respond to emergency situations u2013 including some running, biking, and climbing of several flights of stairs. u2022 Must maintain physical stamina and preparedness to satisfactorily and expeditiously respond to emergency situations throughout duration of employment. u2022 Ability to obtain First Aid and CPR certifications (including use of AED) within six months of hire. u2022 Frequent walking: approximately 5.5 hours per shift. u2022 Occasionally standing in place: up to 2.5 hours per shift. u2022 Regular climbing: climb stairs as part of patrol duties particularly if an elevator is out of service or to clear a building during an emergency. u2022 Frequent reaching out, while driving vehicle, riding bicycle, and locking and unlocking doors. u2022 Frequently lift / move 10 lbs., including wearing required equipment belt weighing approximately 6 lbs. u2022 May occasionally lift /move up to 25 lbs. when conducting rescue assistance. u2022 This position is designated as one that performs an essential function.
