ABOUT THE POSITIONEnvironmental Project Manager | Long Island, NYVHB is seeking a Senior Environmental Planner/Project Manager to join and strengthen our Long Island team. This role leads and supports the preparation of environmental review documentation under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA), with a focus on permitting and entitlements across a diverse range of project types.The Environmental Project Manager plans, schedules, and coordinates complex planning efforts for major projects or multiple mid-sized initiatives. The role requires full responsibility for interpreting, organizing, and executing planning assignments, including land use analysis and development strategy. This position also serves as a technical specialist, maintaining strong internal and external relationships while ensuring project delivery aligns with regulatory requirements and client objectives.At VHB, we provide comprehensive environmental services to private developers, municipalities, transportation agencies, airports and energy firms. Our work integrates technical analysis, long-term planning, and environmental permitting strategies to not only meet regulatory standards but also advance sustainability goals and improve the built environment.ResponsibilitiesDevelop and manage project budgets, track financial performance, and oversee invoicingCollaborate with clients, regulatory agencies, and multidisciplinary project teams to advance projectsPrepare, review, and manage technical documentation, including Environmental Impact Statements (EIS), Environmental Assessments (EA), and permitting applicationsSupport proposal development, including budgeting, staffing estimates, and planning strategyMonitor and interpret regulatory changes, policies, and legislation impacting projectsLead and manage planning studies, feasibility analyses, reuse and redevelopment master plans, and project assessmentsConduct project-level needs assessments and site evaluations, including zoning and environmental constraintsEnsure project compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including NEPA and SEQRA requirementsCoordinate data collection and analysis related to economic, social, and physical land use factorsResearch and interpret zoning codes, land use regulations, and policy frameworksSupervise, mentor, and review the work of junior staff for technical accuracy and qualityPrepare and deliver technical presentations to stakeholders, agencies, and the publicLead public outreach efforts, including meetings, workshops, and community engagement activitiesServe as liaison to advisory boards, elected officials, and planning and zoning committeesConduct research and analysis on demographic, economic, and environmental variablesDevelop and maintain project-related databases and planning toolsRepresent VHB at industry events, conferences, and professional organizationsSkills and KnowledgeIn-depth knowledge of environmental regulations, including NEPA and related federal, state, and local requirementsStrong project and client management skills, with the ability to manage multiple prioritiesStrong understanding of planning principles, research methods, and data analysis techniquesFamiliarity with transportation agencies and State DOTs (preferred)Knowledge of land use planning, transportation, aviation, or related specialization areasExperience with innovative planning approaches such as smart growth, new urbanism, and sustainability initiativesProficiency in GIS a plusAbility to apply statistical and analytical methods to real-world planning challengesEffective communication, presentation, and stakeholder engagement skillsCollaborative, team-oriented mindset with the ability to work independently and meet deadlinesMinimum QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Planning or a related field (e.g., Environmental Studies, Urban Planning, Regional Planning, Sustainability, Economics, Civil Engineering, Transportation Planning)Minimum of 5 years of experience in planning, environmental review, or regulatory complianceDemonstrated experience with NEPA and SEQRA processes, particularly related to permitting and entitlementsMaster’s degree in a related field (preferred)Our best estimate of the salary range for this position located in Hauppauge, NY is $99,000 - $130,000.
